This is the question I ask myself whenever I have to make an important decision during treatment.

There are more moments of choice in dental care than you might expect.

Should treatment begin now, or should we observe the condition a little longer? To what extent should the teeth be treated? Is it possible to preserve more of the natural teeth?

In fact, I believe this question contains more than a simple request to recommend one treatment method. It also reflects the feeling:

“Please consider my situation carefully before making a decision.”

That is why I do not believe that doing more treatment is always better when deciding on a treatment plan.

First, we need to examine the current condition carefully, confirm why treatment is needed,

and consider an approach that will allow the teeth to be used for as long as possible within what is feasible.

That process comes first.

Is This Treatment Something I Could Explain to My Own Family?

It is difficult for patients to assess every aspect of dental treatment themselves.

This is because professional judgment from the dental team is needed when reviewing X-rays, checking the condition of the mouth,

and deciding on a direction among various treatment options.

That is why I believe the standards of the person making the treatment decision are important.

Could I explain why this treatment is necessary to my own family in exactly the same way?

Would I choose the same treatment direction even if the patient were my family member?

I believe I should be able to accept my own answers to these questions before I can discuss treatment with a patient.

Of course, treating patients like family does not mean providing exactly the same treatment to everyone.

In fact, it means the opposite.

It means carefully examining each person’s different dental condition, living environment, and degree of treatment need,

and considering what care is necessary for that individual.

Why We Look at Preserving Natural Teeth for the Long Term

There is no separate, special treatment method simply because the patient is a dentist’s family member.

However, if it were treatment for my own family, I would look more closely for a little longer, think one more time about whether the treatment was truly necessary,

and consider not only what the teeth would look like after treatment, but also how they would be used in the future.

I hope this standard does not change when I treat my patients as well.

These are very simple questions, but the longer I practice, the more important they feel.
