The Warmth a Patient Shared After Receiving Implant-Supported Dentures

When working at a dental clinic, there are moments when the warmth shared with patients gives us strength, just as much as the treatment results themselves.

Recently, a patient who had received implant-supported denture treatment brought us a large amount of peaches and corn they had steamed themselves.

“I brought these so I could share them with the doctors and staff.”

As we accepted the bag they held out while saying those words, we could feel all the care and warmth they had put into preparing the food, and we were deeply touched.

Being able to chew comfortably again

When several teeth are lost, it can become difficult to chew food properly, and the enjoyment of eating may naturally decrease as well.

Because conventional dentures rest on the gums, some patients may feel uncomfortable because the dentures move or seem as though they might come loose, or because of pain when chewing.

In such cases, implant-supported dentures are a method of using several implants to hold the dentures more securely in place.

Implant-supported dentures

Compared with placing implants to replace every tooth, this approach reduces the burden of surgery and cost while also offering the advantage of being more comfortable to use by minimizing movement compared with conventional dentures.

However, the appropriate treatment method may vary depending on the patient’s jawbone condition, overall health, and the condition of the remaining teeth. A thorough examination and sufficient consultation are therefore necessary.

Alternatively,

there was also a patient who had worn dentures for a long time and continued to worry because they were constantly uncomfortable. After consulting with me, the patient first received implants only for the loose lower dentures. After removing the dentures, the patient was delighted to say that they felt so relieved and could chew comfortably.

This patient also initially had concerns and discomfort about eating with dentures.

During treatment, several visits were necessary, and the patient also needed time to adjust to the newly made dentures.

Each time, we carefully checked any uncomfortable areas and made gradual adjustments so the patient could chew comfortably.

I believe that listening carefully to our patients’ discomfort and working together to resolve it is a truly important part of the process.

Many older patients also come to our clinic feeling distressed because they find it difficult to explain their discomfort at the dental clinic they had been visiting.

As we continue providing care, we are increasingly aware of how important this communication process really is.

After completing treatment together, the patient brought us peaches and corn with a bright smile.

We were grateful for the well-ripened peaches, but above all, we could truly feel the patient’s care in the corn they had steamed themselves.

We shared them with the staff during a brief break in the appointment schedule. The corn was warm and savory, while the peaches were sweet and fragrant.

The delicious snacks certainly contributed, but because the patient had personally prepared the food while thinking of us, it became an especially meaningful and happy time.

Implant-supported dentures also require consistent care.

Even after implant-supported denture treatment is complete, regular maintenance is important for continued comfort over the long term.

Remove and clean the dentures thoroughly after meals

Carefully brush around the implants with a soft toothbrush

Use suitable supplementary products, such as an interdental brush

Be cautious with foods that are too hard or chewy

Visit the clinic if the dentures become loose or your gums hurt

Check the condition of the implants and gums through regular examinations

Over time, changes in the shape of the gums may cause the dentures to gradually become loose.

Continuing to use uncomfortable dentures can cause injuries to the gums or place strain on the area around the implants, so regular checkups and adjustments are necessary.

When we see a patient who initially came in with a worried expression smiling comfortably after completing treatment, we also gain great strength from it.

While sharing the corn the patient had steamed personally and the sweet peaches, the staff and I also talked about how we should take even better care of our patients.

It was a day when the feelings contained in the food were even warmer and more gratefully received than the delicious food itself.
