CT Shows the Bone, While an Intraoral Scan Shows the Inside of the Mouth

To place an implant properly, the bone must first be examined accurately.

A 3D CT scan can show the height and width of the jawbone.

The location of the nerve canal, the distance from the maxillary sinus, and the presence of inflammation can also be viewed three-dimensionally.

However, CT alone cannot show everything.

An implant is not placed only in the bone.

A tooth must eventually be placed on top of it.

In other words, it is necessary to consider not only “where there is bone,” but also “where the tooth will need to be later.”

An intraoral scan is needed for this purpose.

An intraoral scanner digitally records the current arrangement of the teeth, the shape of the gums, and the way the teeth come together.

If CT is a map of the bone, an intraoral scan is a topographical map of the inside of the mouth.

By looking at these two sets of information together, we can plan the implant not simply where it can be placed, but where it will be suitable for long-term chewing.

If the implant is positioned too far outward or inward, the restoration may look unnatural.

If it is placed too deeply or too shallowly, food may become trapped or cleaning may be difficult.

If the direction of chewing forces is unfavorable, stress may be placed on the implant and the surrounding bone.

After creating a plan with 3D CT and an intraoral scan, we make a digital guide when necessary.

A digital guide is a guidance device used for implant surgery.

It helps implement the planned implant position and direction during the actual surgery.

Simply put, it is similar to a navigation system for surgery.

There is a difference between knowing the route only in your head and traveling with navigation turned on.

A digital guide helps the dentist follow the pre-established surgical plan more consistently inside the mouth.

Of course, a guide is not essential for every implant surgery.

However, it may be helpful when the implant site is close to a nerve, when there is insufficient bone, or when several implants need to be placed at the same time.

It can also be useful when the position of the restoration is particularly important.
