Hello, this is Ribbon Plastic Surgery at Sinsa Station.

"My mother is now in her 60s, and her eyelids have become so droopy that she is complaining of pain. I searched online, and it seems that ‘upper eyelid surgery’ is commonly performed in cases like this.
Are there cases where upper eyelid surgery is possible and cases where it is not?"
Upper eyelid surgery is usually performed on middle-aged people with significant eyelid drooping.
By removing some tissue and creating a double eyelid, it can help make the eyes look much younger and more defined than before.
However, it is not right to assume that upper eyelid surgery is the answer 100% of the time just because someone is middle-aged or has eyelid drooping.
This is because there are many different ways to improve sagging of the upper eyelid.
In particular, people with OOO should be careful, because upper eyelid surgery can actually lead to a more unnatural result.
Today, I would like to take some time to explain whether this upper eyelid surgery is suitable or not.
Please read until the end, and feel free to contact us anytime if you have any personal questions.

Remember the key point of upper eyelid surgery.
As we age, our skin naturally sags.
In particular, the upper eyelids are much thinner than other tissues, so sagging occurs more quickly.
In such cases, it can make the eyes look sleepy, and in severe cases, it may cause irritation around the eyes or interfere with vision.
Therefore, if correction is deemed necessary, it is advisable to undergo upper eyelid surgery.
In simple terms, upper eyelid surgery can be understood as a procedure that combines removal of sagging tissue with double eyelid creation.
If a double eyelid line already exists, the incision is made along that line to remove wrinkled skin and unnecessary fat.
If you do not have a double eyelid, the incision is made at the necessary location, and a double eyelid is naturally created after surgery.
However, there is something to be careful about here as well.
If too much tissue is removed, a thick double eyelid line may form, leading to an awkward result.
Therefore, it is advisable to determine whether the degree of eyelid sagging can be covered by upper eyelid surgery and to proceed with the appropriate procedure.

Upper eyelid surgery is recommended for the following people.
-
When the double eyelid line has sagged overall
-
When vision is obstructed by droopy eyelids
-
When wrinkles around the eyes are severe
As mentioned briefly earlier, this applies to cases where there is a concern that upper eyelid surgery may instead create a thick double eyelid line.
In such cases, surgery may be performed by partially removing the sagging tissue and then creating a buried double eyelid.
However, if buried sutures are used when the eyelids are sagging, the area above the double eyelid may sag again and cover the existing line, and there is also a possibility that the result may loosen over time.
In this case, if the sagging tissue is sufficiently removed through excision, a much more natural result can be expected even without creating an incisional double eyelid.
One thing I would like to say to those preparing for surgery
The conditions for ordinary eye surgery, which many people think of, and middle-aged eye surgery such as upper eyelid surgery are different.
First of all, because the eyelid has lost elasticity, there are far more factors to consider than in ordinary eye surgery performed on people in their 10s to 30s.
Middle-aged patients tend to prioritize nearby clinics or lower prices rather than looking at reviews online.
Given that this is a delicate procedure, I think a more careful approach is necessary.

At Ribbon Plastic Surgery at Sinsa Station, we have been meeting many patients as board-certified plastic surgeons since 1999.
Above all, we explain everything kindly at the patient’s level and carefully discuss the changes that may occur after surgery, as well as the possibility of side effects. If you need a consultation, please visit us.
Thank you for reading this long post.
