Hello, this is Ribbon Plastic Surgery at Sinsa Station.

Recently, not only people in their 20s and 30s, but also patients in their 40s, 50s, and older have been visiting plastic surgery clinics at a higher rate.
When we talk with middle-aged patients who come to our clinic, many say things like, "The sagging skin around my eyes is really bothering me" or "I feel very self-conscious when meeting people."
In today’s post, we will introduce two surgeries that may be recommended for people in exactly these situations.
Midlife eye surgery differs from the general eye surgery applied to people in their 20s and 30s.
That is because it is aimed at eyes whose skin elasticity has significantly decreased, causing even functional problems.
Also, even among people of the same age, the degree of aging can vary depending on lifestyle habits and previous care methods, so it is very important to perform surgery tailored to each individual.
If upper or lower blepharoplasty is performed simply because the skin around the eyes has sagged, it may actually make the eyes look sharper or produce unnatural results, so caution is needed.
In particular, excessive surgery carries the risk of side effects, so you should have a thorough consultation with a board-certified plastic surgeon and proceed only when it is truly necessary.
So, who is upper/lower blepharoplasty suitable for, and how is the surgery performed?
I’ll explain in the following sections, so please read comfortably. ^^

Upper Blepharoplasty, Lower Blepharoplasty: Surgical Principles and Recommended Candidates
- Upper Blepharoplasty
When the upper eyelid sags, it can cause various problems.
It can make you look older, and in severe cases, it may even cause functional issues.
In such cases, upper blepharoplasty can help by removing the sagging tissue and creating a double eyelid crease to fold the upper eyelid once.
The procedure involves making an incision along the double eyelid line, removing some of the wrinkled skin and fat, and then suturing it closed.
※ Upper blepharoplasty method for eyes with a double eyelid

What is important here is that only the necessary amount should be removed; doing too much is not helpful at all.
In fact, it can create a thick double eyelid line and even lead to what is commonly called a "sausage-like double eyelid," so it is important to plan the amount of tissue removal according to the degree of sagging around the eyes.
Upper blepharoplasty is recommended for the following people:
| - When the double eyelid line has sagged overall - When the sagging eyelid obstructs the field of vision - When wrinkles around the eyes are severe |
- Lower Blepharoplasty
On the other hand, lower blepharoplasty is recommended for people who are concerned about sagging or bulging under the eyes.
By removing or repositioning the under-eye fat to create a smoother surface, it can improve wrinkles and elasticity and help create a healthier-looking eye area.
※ Transconjunctival lower blepharoplasty, fat repositioning method

※ Transcutaneous lower blepharoplasty method

However, there is something to be careful about here as well.
When the under-eye area is very bulging, some people say, "I want all of this fat removed."
As aging progresses, not only collagen but also fat decreases, so this must be considered when deciding how much to remove.
If too much fat is removed just because the under-eye area is currently very prominent, the area may become sunken again later, and revision surgery may be needed.
A puffy under-eye area is caused not only by excess fat, but also by sagging skin layers that normally hold that fat in place from the outside, so it is important to strengthen and secure this area as well.
If there is little to no skin sagging and only the under-eye fat is prominent, fat repositioning is performed by making an incision in the inner conjunctiva. But if the skin is sagging or wrinkled, the skin close to the eyelashes is directly incised to perform fat repositioning and lifting of the skin and muscles at the same time.
Lower blepharoplasty is recommended for the following people:
| - When under-eye fat is severely bulging - When there are under-eye fat issues along with decreased elasticity and excessive wrinkles - When dark circles under the eyes are severe |

Today, we looked at upper and lower blepharoplasty.
If the procedure is performed when it is not appropriate, it may cause side effects or affect satisfaction, so if you need correction, please begin with a consultation first.
We at Ribbon Plastic Surgery at Sinsa Station will support your bright and beautiful eye area.
Thank you for reading this long post.
