Hello, this is Park Jae-hyun, Chief Director of Ribbon Plastic Surgery at Sinsa Station. ^^

Recently, when it comes to upper eyelid surgery, it is often the patients’ children rather than the patients themselves who contact us.
Perhaps because they have much more information about surgery from the internet and other sources, when I look over the inquiries we receive, I get the impression that they already know quite a bit about upper eyelid surgery.
In particular, upper eyelid surgery is characterized by being applied to upper eyelids that have undergone a certain degree of aging.

For that reason, it seems many people think, “The more tissue I remove, the clearer and more defined my eyes will be.”
However, this can actually cause side effects, so it is something to be careful about.
Today, I would like to talk in a little more detail about this.
Please read comfortably through the article below, and if you have any personal questions, feel free to contact Ribbon Plastic Surgery anytime. ^^
The Key Point of Upper Eyelid Surgery
Upper eyelid surgery can be simply understood as a procedure in which an appropriate incision is made in the upper eyelid, sagging tissue is removed, and a double eyelid is created.
If you already had a double eyelid and had no dissatisfaction with it, that area is incised and the tissue is removed.
If you had no double eyelid at all, or if you did not like the existing double eyelid even before it began to sag, then through consultation with the patient, we newly design the ideal line where the double eyelid will be formed.
At this point, the required amount of tissue to remove is also determined.
However, excessive removal should be avoided.
If tissue is removed too aggressively out of excessive desire for improvement, the double eyelid line can become too thick and result in an unnatural outcome.
In the past, some patients who had this kind of surgery chose revision surgery because their double eyelids were too deep and made them look heavy.

Some people already feel burdened by the situation of aging and developing a double eyelid, so if that line becomes too deep and not smooth, the surgical result can naturally become a source of stress, right?
In that sense, the key point of upper eyelid surgery is to restore the elasticity of the upper eyelid in a “natural” way while considering its relationship with the surrounding tissues.
Therefore, for a better result, it is important to have 충분히 consult with an experienced board-certified plastic surgeon and design both the necessary amount of tissue removal and the ideal double eyelid line.
Upper eyelid surgery is recommended for the following people.
-
When the double eyelid line is covered or sagging due to eyelid drooping
-
When the eyelid sags severely and obstructs vision (visual obstruction)
-
When wrinkles around the eyes are severe and make you look older than your actual age
-
When you want to restore the eyes you had before the sagging began

A double eyelid line that may become too deep,
how can it be prevented?
However, no matter how much tissue is removed in moderation, there are people whose double eyelids are predicted to become deeper after surgery depending on the structure of their eyes.
In such cases, if the surgery is performed using the original upper eyelid surgery method, it is difficult to ignore the possibility of a side effect in which the area between the upper eyelid lash line and the double eyelid protrudes like a sausage.
At this time, surgery can be performed in the direction of removing the sagging skin through a brow lift excision and creating a buried double eyelid.
Rather than making an incision along the double eyelid line, this method removes tissue from an area that is not very noticeable and then recreates the double eyelid using a buried method.
Here, tissue removal is also a very important part.
If the removal is too much or, conversely, too little for the patient’s skin condition, there is a possibility that the result will be less satisfying even with a buried double eyelid.
Therefore, it is important to properly remove sagging tissue and fat and create a firm double eyelid.

Upper eyelid surgery deals with sagging skin, so it is more difficult than general eye surgery.
Also, because tissue is removed, deeper layers such as fat and muscle must also be considered.
Since we must consider not only functional issues but also the patient’s satisfaction after surgery, careful consultation and design must naturally come first before surgery.
