Hello. This is Ribbon Plastic Surgery, located at Exit 1 of Sinsa Station. :)
If you are interested in eye plastic surgery, you have probably heard the term “eyelid correction” before. Since many people think of it as a “procedure performed together with double eyelid surgery,” some may see it as just one of the options for surgery.
In recent years, eyelid correction has often been performed for cosmetic reasons to make the eyes look clearer and more defined. However, its original purpose is to correct eyes that look tired, have drooping upper eyelids, or have uneven sizes on both sides.
This is generally referred to as “ptosis.”
In ptosis, “blepharo” refers to the eyelid and “ptosis” means drooping, so ptosis can be interpreted as “drooping eyelid.”
In other words, eyelid correction is a surgical method that improves drooping eyelids to create larger, more defined eyes. :)

Ptosis can occur for various reasons.
It may happen because the skin sags, or because the levator muscle, which opens the eyes, becomes loose.
The reason eyelid correction is often performed together with double eyelid surgery is that ptosis may appear after double eyelid surgery.
Some people say that even after creating a double eyelid crease, their impression looks sleepier.
This is one of the common side effects when double eyelid surgery is performed on eyes with ptosis, as the muscle remains drooped in the same position while only the skin is lifted.
In such cases, it is better to shorten the levator muscle to improve the sleepy appearance. ^^

■ What Is Eyelid Correction?
Try touching the skin on your cheek and eyelid alternately. What does it feel like?
The cheek has a certain amount of fullness and is relatively elastic, to the point that it can indent when pressed.
By contrast, the eyelid is much thinner than the cheek and is a part that trembles and moves frequently due to actions such as blinking.
Because the eyelid was originally designed to protect the eyeball, it requires more movement. In addition, since it does not have well-developed sebaceous glands, its moisturizing ability is naturally weaker.
You can see that eye cream is sold as a separate product, and compared with other cosmetics, it is much stickier and provides more moisture.
That shows how much more sensitive the eyelid tissue is compared with other skin. But even the eyelid has everything it needs.
The epidermis, dermis, fat, and muscle are all intricately located there, and nerves and blood vessels are also complexly intertwined around it.
When this eyelid ages, the skin and muscles loosen and can easily droop downward.
When that happens, it not only makes you look tired aesthetically, but can also obstruct the pupil and interfere with the “function of seeing.”
The surgery that strengthens the drooping eyelid and muscle power is what we call “eyelid correction.”

■ What Are the Effects of Eyelid Correction?
The surgical method for eyelid correction varies slightly depending on the cause of eyelid drooping.
If the muscle strength is normal but only the skin is sagging, double eyelid surgery alone can improve it.
If the muscle strength is slightly reduced in this case, eyelid correction can be performed together to create a clearer eye shape.
For those who have struggled with uneven eyes, the balance between both eyes can be restored, helping them get away from a negative impression.
In particular, uneven eyes can leave a bad image in social and work settings, so many people feel stressed about it.
For such people, eyelid correction can be a good alternative. :)

Eyelid correction is often performed for cosmetic reasons, but if it is done too excessively, it can instead lead to awkward results, so caution is needed.
It should be performed on eyes with ptosis, and if cosmetic correction is needed, it is best to have a thorough consultation with a board-certified plastic surgeon and determine how much the levator muscle should be shortened to achieve a natural result.
Our clinic absolutely avoids excessive surgery.
We follow the principle of natural results and only provide guidance when it is truly necessary, so please contact us if you need help.
Then see you in the next post, thank you. :)
