Hello. We are Reborn Plastic Surgery, which has been meeting with patients for over 20 years at Exit 1 of Sinsa Station. :)
Sometimes patients ask questions like this: “I’m not sure whether I need double eyelid surgery, ptosis correction, or both together~”
If you’re reading this, you may also be wondering what kind of problem each surgery is recommended for, since it seems like ptosis correction is being performed quite often these days.
In simple terms, ptosis correction is a surgery needed to improve sleepy-looking eyes.
Because ptosis correction can make the eyes look clearer, many of the people who come to our clinic for consultations are interested when they hear, “If you do double eyelid surgery and ptosis correction together, your eyes can look bigger... ”
Of course, there are also cases these days where ptosis correction is performed for cosmetic purposes.
However, in principle, it is a surgery performed when there is discomfort in opening the eyes, and if it is done too aggressively, side effects can occur, so caution is needed.
Still not sure about the difference between ptosis correction and double eyelid surgery? Based on our long-standing know-how, we’ll explain only the key points. :)

What Is the Biggest Difference Between Ptosis Correction and Double Eyelid Surgery?
Before getting into the main point, let me make one request: the “difference” discussed here does not refer only to cosmetic differences.
If we look at it from a purely cosmetic perspective, double eyelid surgery creates a line in the middle of the eyelid, producing the effect of the skin folding once.
On the other hand, ptosis correction can be performed even when there is no double eyelid.
To understand the difference between ptosis correction and double eyelid surgery, it is important to first identify what condition the eyelid is fundamentally in.

Ptosis correction is, simply put, a surgery that adjusts the “muscle.”
Have you heard of “ptosis”? As the term suggests, it refers to a condition in which the eyelid droops and causes various forms of discomfort.
Eyelids can droop for a number of reasons. The skin may sag due to aging, but the muscles beneath the skin may also loosen, causing difficulty when opening the eyes.
When this happens, functional problems with the eyes are accompanied, and in severe cases, the person may not see well in front of them and may lift their chin or strain their eyebrows and forehead, leaving deep wrinkles.
In such cases, ptosis correction strengthens the loosened muscle so that the eyes can open more comfortably.
By contrast, double eyelid surgery is a surgery that adjusts the “skin.” As mentioned earlier, one cause of ptosis is sagging skin.
Even if there is no problem with the muscle at all, if the skin above it sags and covers the eye, the same problem of not being able to see well in front can occur.
Of course, these days many people seek a more refined look through double eyelid surgery even without skin sagging.
In that sense, ptosis correction and double eyelid surgery are very different.
Depending on which surgery is performed, the amount of iris exposure and the degree to which the eyes appear larger can change, so it is important to determine the surgical method that suits you through sufficient consultation.

Are There Cases Where Both Surgeries Are Performed Together?
Among people who come in for double eyelid surgery, there are also those whose muscle strength has weakened. If double eyelid surgery is performed alone in this case without ptosis correction, what result would it lead to?
The sagging skin can be improved as the double eyelid is formed, but the muscle itself is not improved at all, so the sleepy-looking impression may actually become stronger.
That is why, in such cases, both surgeries are performed at the same time to improve the skin and muscle together. They may also be combined to create a more natural effect.
When treating ptosis, there are non-incisional and incisional methods.
Among these, if surgery is performed using the incisional method, a wound on the skin is unavoidable. If this is left as is, the muscle may weaken again later, or depending on the patient, a scar may become visible.
In such cases, combining the procedure with double eyelid surgery can help prevent side effects.
If a patient does not want the visible double eyelid that appears in cases where ptosis correction is absolutely necessary, creating a subtle hidden double eyelid line can also be considered.
Ptosis correction is a surgical method that corrects sleepy-looking eyes and uneven eyes. It is applied to ptosis caused by weakened muscles, and depending on the situation, it may be performed for cosmetic purposes.
If it is not really necessary, forcing the procedure can cause various problems, so please be sure to consult thoroughly with an experienced plastic surgery clinic and proceed only when necessary.
