When you hear the word “eyelid correction,” what kind of image comes to mind? Most people would think, “It makes the eyes look more balanced.”
But there is one more thing: for people with severe upper eyelid drooping, eyelid correction can make it much easier to open the eyes, helping the eyes appear larger.
These days, eyelid correction is often performed together with double eyelid surgery, so many people also ask our clinic whether these two procedures can be done at the same time.
Of course, because the size of both eyes in a person is not perfectly identical, and because eyelids can droop more over time and give a sleepy impression, I can’t say it is absolutely impossible.
However, if you go ahead with surgery without carefully checking things first, your eyes may end up looking too intense or unnatural, so you should be cautious.
So who is eyelid correction recommended for, and what kind of changes can you expect before and after eyelid correction surgery? If you focus a little and carefully read what follows from here, I would appreciate it. :)

What kind of surgery is eyelid correction?
Eyelid correction is a surgical method used to correct tired-looking or drooping eyes, or cases where the size of both eyes is not balanced.
The symptom of drooping eyelids is commonly referred to as ptosis, and eyelid correction can be considered when the muscles used to open the eyes are somewhat weakened, making the eyes look sleepy even when you try to open them with effort.
“So then why do people get eyelid correction for cosmetic reasons these days?” As mentioned earlier, muscles gradually weaken as we age, so even if there is no major problem right now, a small correction can make the eyes look clearer.
However, the reason we recommend double eyelid surgery together with eyelid correction is, in principle, limited to people who have ptosis and for whom double eyelid surgery alone could make the eyes look even more tired.

Let me explain a little more simply.
A person’s eyelids consist of skin and dermis, with subcutaneous fat, fascia, and a muscle layer beneath them.
As you can see, the muscle layer is the deepest tissue. If this area becomes weak, no matter how much of a double eyelid line is created in the skin on the outside, the underlying problem does not change. In other words, the drooping eyelid remains.
If a double eyelid line is added on top of that, the area below the double eyelid crease becomes wider, creating a sleepy and awkward impression.
Also, for people whose eye sizes differ, there are many cases where they want eyelid correction to address this because it can give the other person a negative impression.
When one eye is more open than the other, it is called asymmetric eyes, and people usually think only one side needs surgery. However, there are cases where if only one eye is operated on, the normal eye can also droop, so surgery on both eyes may be performed together.
I will explain this part in more detail later. :)

What changes happen before and after eyelid correction?
Simply put, eyelid correction is a surgery that “strengthens the muscles.”
When this happens, the strength for opening the eyes is naturally improved, so you can open your eyes more clearly without having to try so hard.
People with ptosis often complain of functional problems with their eyes because the black part of the eye is covered, and in such cases, eyelid correction can reduce that discomfort.
The same goes for asymmetric eyes.
As mentioned earlier, both eyes need to be corrected, but because muscles are controlled by nerves, if only one eye is operated on, the other eye can also experience issues in nerve transmission.
When both eyes undergo eyelid correction, the previously closed eye naturally opens, making it possible to create eyes of similar size on both sides.
In this way, eyelid correction is a surgery performed when there is ptosis or asymmetric eyes, and it is not a procedure that can simply be done because someone wants bigger eyes.
Please remember that it is best to consult sufficiently with a board-certified plastic surgeon and check whether the procedure is suitable for you!
