Hello. We are Re:본 Plastic Surgery, welcoming you at Exit 1 of Sinsa Station.

"As I’ve gotten older, my eyelids have started to droop, and I’m worried."
As we age, collagen is lost and skin elasticity decreases.
Skin with reduced elasticity is gradually pulled downward by gravity.
The eyelids are no exception.
Drooping eyelids with age can make the face look older, and they can also block vision or cause irritation around the eyes.
The eyelids may even turn inward, causing the eyelashes to poke the eyes.
Because of this, many people who come in for eye surgery in middle age are seeking it for functional reasons rather than purely aesthetic ones.
Therefore, it is important to carefully assess the condition of the skin and the degree of aging based on the patient’s age group, then create a plan and proceed with surgery accordingly.
Upper eyelid surgery?
Upper eyelid surgery is a procedure that improves sagging skin on the upper eyelids.
The upper eyelids are constantly blinking to protect the eyeballs, and because they do not have well-developed sebaceous glands, they tend to sag faster than other skin.
When the upper eyelids sag, they can cover the pupil and obstruct vision, cause irritation, or make the eyelashes poke the eyes.
Upper eyelid surgery is the procedure that relieves these inconveniences by making an incision in the sagging eyelid, removing wrinkled skin and unnecessary fat, then suturing along the existing double-eyelid line or creating a new one to minimize scarring.
This helps make the eyes look clearer while also improving functional issues.

Will upper eyelid surgery change my appearance?
After upper eyelid surgery, the double-eyelid line may become more defined or the eye shape may be corrected, making the impression look sharper.
However, if the skin sagging is severe, upper eyelid surgery may require a larger incision area, which can make the expression look harsher and narrow the space between the eyes and eyebrows.
For this reason, upper eyelid surgery is generally recommended for people whose upper eyelid skin sagging is not very severe.
If there is a lot of sagging, we recommend other methods such as brow lift surgery or buried suture double-eyelid surgery.
A brow lift surgery lifts the sagging tissue based on the lower edge of the eyebrow. Afterwards, refining the line with buried suture double-eyelid surgery can create a softer and more stable impression.
However, a brow lift is also not suitable for everyone, so a thorough consultation with a specialist should come first before deciding on surgery.

Can’t sagging eyes be corrected with double-eyelid surgery alone?
An important point in middle-aged eye surgery is that the cause of the drooping eyes must be addressed.
A distinctive feature of upper eyelid surgery is that it removes unnecessarily stretched skin and accumulated orbital fat.
If surgery is performed by simply creating a double-eyelid line without going through this process, the sagging skin below the line may remain as is, which can result in a sausage-like eyelid and requires caution.
Also, the functional discomfort may remain completely unchanged while only the impression is altered.

Precautions for upper eyelid surgery
Because upper eyelid surgery deals with sagging skin and fat, there are more factors to consider than in typical eye cosmetic surgery.
If surgery is done indiscriminately without considering these factors, it can cause various aesthetic and functional problems, so special care is needed.
Before deciding on surgery, it is essential to have a thorough consultation with the medical team performing the procedure and to carefully plan and design the surgery with each individual’s characteristics in mind from the very beginning. Only then is a natural and stable result possible.
This requires the surgeon’s experience, technical skill, and meticulous care.
Also, it is not enough to have simply "done a lot of double-eyelid surgeries or eye cosmetic procedures"; there must be sufficient clinical experience operating on various age groups.
For safety and a high level of satisfaction, you should entrust the procedure to a clinic that properly understands the anatomical characteristics of middle-aged eyelids and the surrounding tissues.
For example, upper eyelid surgery in particular requires tissue excision.
In middle age, regenerative capacity drops significantly compared to people in their 20s and 30s.
Therefore, if there is excessive bleeding during the excision process or a scar is left behind, the surgery must be performed with even greater care and precision.
Caution is also needed when using medications such as anesthetics during the procedure.
If a patient has high blood pressure or diabetes, this must be identified and the appropriate medication should be used accordingly.
Upper eyelid surgery is a more complex and delicate procedure than general double-eyelid surgery.
Rather than a place that only specializes in correcting eye shape or double-eyelid surgery, we recommend finding a clinic that understands the characteristics of middle-aged eyelids and performs the procedure accordingly.
Also, everyone ages differently and at different speeds, and the thickness of the eyelid skin, the amount of fat, and the strength used to open the eyes all vary from person to person.
Therefore, before surgery, we urge you to find a board-certified plastic surgeon who can create a surgical plan and design not only based on the overall features and balance of the face, but also on the detailed areas around the eyes.
