Hello. We are Re:본 Plastic Surgery, located at Exit 1 of Sinsa Station, where we welcome you.

"I looked into double eyelid surgery, but they said I need eye-opening correction."
"They said I need eye-opening correction because of ptosis, but what is ptosis?"
Have you ever gone in for double eyelid surgery and been told that you also need "eye-opening correction" because of "ptosis"?
Ptosis refers to a condition in which the muscle that opens the eyes is weak, causing the eyelid to droop downward.
Eye-opening correction is a surgery that strengthens this muscle.
If you have ptosis and undergo double eyelid surgery without eye-opening correction, the drooping muscle cannot be lifted properly, which can create a stronger impression of looking sleepy and tired.
Also, the double eyelid may loosen again quickly, or even after the surgery, the eyes may not look as clear and defined, so satisfaction may be low.
Therefore, for patients with ptosis, we guide them to receive eye-opening correction along with double eyelid surgery.
Ptosis?
Ptosis is diagnosed when the eyelid covers more than 2 mm of the pupil.
However, this can also be checked easily at home.
If you hold your forehead still so it does not move, then open your eyes naturally, and your eyelid covers more than one-third of the dark part of the eye, there is a high possibility of ptosis.
When ptosis is present, the eyelid muscle lacks strength, so the person habitually uses the forehead muscles. That is why, if you prevent the forehead from moving, it becomes difficult to open the eyes.
For the same reason, deep forehead wrinkles may also form when ptosis is present.
Moreover, muscles that are not used will inevitably lose strength over time.
As a result, the eyelids continue to droop downward.
In particular, as you age, skin elasticity decreases, and the degree of sagging gradually becomes more severe.
Therefore, even if you are not necessarily planning to get double eyelid surgery, it is good to strengthen the function of the eye-opening muscles through eye-opening correction.

Eye-opening correction surgery method
Eye-opening correction is a surgery that strengthens the levator muscle of the eyelid.
There are both incision and non-incision methods for eye-opening correction.
The incision method removes some muscle and fat, then fixes the levator muscle of the eyelid.
The non-incision method adjusts the levator palpebrae superioris muscle through small openings without making an incision.
Whether to use an incision or non-incision method should not be chosen arbitrarily; it can vary depending on the shape and characteristics of your eyes.
If the eyelids are thin and the muscle laxity is not severe, correction can be done without an incision.
However, if the eyelid sagging is severe and the ptosis symptoms are severe, the incision method should be considered.

Is double eyelid surgery necessary?
When receiving eye-opening correction, some people ask whether double eyelid surgery is absolutely necessary.
These are people who worry that if a double eyelid is created on eyes that did not have one before, their impression may change.
To improve the sagging and stretched skin caused by ptosis, double eyelid surgery is performed together to remove the drooping part and create a line.
If the sagging skin is not improved, the muscle may weaken again later, or in some patients, scarring may become visible.
In such cases, creating a double eyelid can help reduce side effects.
However, if you are worried that a deeper double eyelid crease may change your impression, we can also create a subtle hidden double eyelid line.

Today, we talked about eye-opening correction and ptosis.
Eye-opening correction surgery targets the muscles beneath the skin, so it is a more difficult procedure than double eyelid surgery.
Therefore, to receive safe eye-opening correction surgery with a high level of satisfaction, we strongly recommend that you first receive a thorough consultation with medical staff, including a surgeon who has extensive surgical experience and know-how.
If the medical staff performing the procedure does not carefully diagnose you, does not provide sufficient consultation, or proceeds with surgery without fully considering the unique characteristics of each person’s face, not only may you fail to get the results you want, but side effects such as overcorrection or lagophthalmos may also occur.
Overcorrection makes the eyes look as if they are being opened too wide, and lagophthalmos is a side effect in which the eyes do not close properly.
Therefore, rather than rushing into surgery, we ask that you look for a clinic that creates an appropriate surgical plan through sufficient consultation.
Rebon Plastic Surgery, which has maintained the same name and location near Sinsa Station for over 20 years, provides guidance on surgeries suitable for each individual through one-on-one consultations with a plastic surgery specialist director.
