The lips can be considered another attractive point on the face.
It is clear that masks will soon no longer be required in full, so it is not unusual to pay more attention than usual to the lips, which we have barely seen during COVID-19.
In this post, I would like to talk about lip volume.
First, let’s look at what lip thickness ratio is considered ideal.

You may have often heard of the golden ratio. It is the ratio of 1:1.618.
This ratio also applies to the lips.
It can be said to be ideal when the lower lip has about 1.6 times more volume than the upper lip.
What is important here is not the number 1:1.618 itself,
but that it is ideal for the lower lip to have more volume than the upper lip.
A simple way to add volume is with fillers or fat grafting.
Fillers are useful for shaping the lips, but if too much volume is added with fillers,
the lips can end up looking unnatural, like a water balloon.
So when I add volume to the lips, I prefer fat grafting.
This is because it can create a natural fullness while preserving the shape of the lips.
Let me introduce lip fat grafting, which adds volume to the lips.
This patient visited our clinic and underwent a forehead lift, under-eye fat repositioning, and fat grafting.

During the consultation, I felt that it would be better if the lower lip had a bit more volume,
and I recommended that the patient also have lower lip fat grafting.
The patient said that she had previously wanted more volume there as well, and while the above procedures were being done,
lower lip fat grafting was performed at the same time.

Before lower lip fat grafting surgery

1 month after lower lip fat grafting surgery

3 months after lower lip fat grafting surgery (final result)
The result at 3 months after fat grafting remains stable as long as body weight does not change.
As it becomes part of the face, if weight is lost,
the volume decreases as well,
and if weight is gained, the volume increases too.
That is why at 1 month after surgery,
some of the fat has not yet taken,
so the volume is greater than in the 3-month follow-up photos.
If you compare the final 3-month photos with the preoperative photos,
you can see that lower lip volume has been created naturally through fat grafting.
Let’s arrange them side by side for a clearer view.

Left) Before surgery / Middle) 1 month after lower lip fat grafting / Right) 3 months after lower lip fat grafting
Here is another case.
This patient underwent under-eye fat repositioning, Indian band subcision (subcutaneous excision), and fat grafting.

Compared with the upper lip, the lower lip volume was lacking,
and lower lip fat grafting was performed at the same time.

Before lower lip fat grafting surgery

2 months after lower lip fat grafting surgery
After 2 months following lower lip fat grafting, it can be seen that the ratio of the upper and lower lips has become similar.
In cases like this, when the lower lip is thinner than the upper lip, even bringing it to a similar thickness
can make the overall proportions look much better.

Not only the lower lip, but fat grafting to both the upper and lower lips
can also create fuller lips.
Thank you.
