Hello.
This is iHo Plastic Surgery, where beauty comes alive again.
Today, the concept of beauty is no longer limited to the younger generation. Middle-aged people today are also very interested in their appearance and are making many efforts to improve signs of aging. Appearance management has become an important value for people of all ages and genders. It is not only about aesthetic beauty, but also plays a social role, so it has started to take priority. The eyes are a part of the face that say a lot about a person. Since a person’s impression can change greatly depending on their eyes, when the eyelids sag due to aging, it can cause not only aesthetic concerns but also functional discomfort. That is why many people look into upper blepharoplasty and brow lifts to improve sagging eyelids. Let’s take some time to check which surgery is right for me between upper blepharoplasty and brow lift.

Upper Blepharoplasty
Upper blepharoplasty refers to a method of making an incision in the thin skin just above the eyelid and removing the excessively sagging skin to correct the drooping area.
Because this procedure involves making an incision above the eyelid and removing skin tissue, it is suitable for people with thin skin. If the skin is thick, this method may not be appropriate. That is because after a large amount of the thin skin underneath is removed, the thick skin above comes down, making the eyelid area appear thicker.

Brow Lift
A brow lift is a procedure that lifts sagging skin by making an incision in the thick tissue located at the boundary between the upper eyelid and the eyebrow.
This is considered a suitable surgical method for people with thick skin. By removing the thick tissue just below the eyebrow, the sagging outer part can be improved.

Is surgery difficult if the space between the eyes and eyebrows is narrow?

There are various cases where the space between the eyes and eyebrows is narrow. A representative case is when someone cannot open their eyes well and uses their forehead to help open them. In such cases, if upper blepharoplasty is performed, the forehead will no longer be used. As opening the eyes becomes easier through upper blepharoplasty, the person may stop moving their eyebrows, or the eyebrows may return to their original position, causing the distance between the eyes and eyebrows to become narrower. Therefore, it is important to understand the eye shape through sufficient consultation before surgery and determine the amount of tissue to be removed.
If a detailed examination shows that proceeding with upper blepharoplasty could make the eyebrows and eyes too close, it may be worth considering combining it with a brow lift.

It is not correct to say that upper blepharoplasty makes the eyes and eyebrows closer together.
In such cases, a brow lift is performed!!

Which surgery leaves more visible scars?

When performing upper blepharoplasty, it is usually done together with double eyelid surgery, so when the eyes are open, the incision line curls inward and the scar is hidden.

In the case of a brow lift, because there is an incision line at the boundary of the eyebrow, it is better to think of it as being somewhat visible for about one to two months.

Is surgery for sagging eyelids permanent?

Many people consider upper blepharoplasty or brow lift to improve sagging eyelids. Some hesitate to have surgery because they worry the sagging will return after the procedure. The surgery itself can be said to be semi-permanent.
However, because the rate of aging and lifestyle differ from person to person, it can be said to last on average about 5 to 10 years. Still, compared with people who do not undergo surgery, those who have upper blepharoplasty or a brow lift to improve sagging eyelids can definitely appear younger than their peers.

Upper Blepharoplasty VS Brow Lift
Which is more effective?

If a brow lift focuses on correcting sagging areas, upper blepharoplasty can be applied when the eyes are uneven in size on both sides or when it is difficult to open the eyes because the eye-opening strength is weak.

For younger people, can double eyelid incision surgery be used as a way to improve sagging eyelids?
Because eye surgery for younger people also falls within the broad category of upper blepharoplasty, it can be described as upper blepharoplasty. However, even if teenagers and people in their 20s repeatedly apply and remove double eyelid tape to create a crease and end up with stretched or rough eyelid skin, it does not become the loose, lack-of-elasticity sagging seen in middle-aged and older adults. So it would not necessarily be described as upper blepharoplasty.

When looking into ways to improve sagging eyelids, it is only natural to wonder whether upper blepharoplasty or a brow lift is the better choice. To proceed with the method that is right for you, it is important to check various factors such as the condition and shape of the eyes, eye-opening strength, and the distance between the eyes and eyebrows, and then choose the most suitable surgical method. Only then can you achieve the result you want.
