Hello.
This is the newly reopened Eye Plastic Surgery Clinic.
To create a more favorable impression, more people of all ages and genders are trying to improve their shortcomings through effort. First impressions can change depending on outward features such as the eyes, nose, mouth, and style, and among these, the eyes have a particularly large influence. That is why, even when they do not feel tired, many people often hear that they look sleepy or tired, and they look into eye plastic surgery to address what they feel is lacking.
Recently, thanks to advances in medical technology, eye plastic surgery methods have become more specialized. So today, we have prepared a post to help those who are wondering which method among various options such as double eyelid surgery and ptosis correction is right for them.
What is the difference between double eyelid surgery and ptosis correction?

Double eyelid surgery is a procedure that creates a crease on monolids (eyes without a double eyelid) to make a double eyelid.

To explain the procedure in more detail, you can think of it as connecting the designed double eyelid line with the muscle that opens the eyes. It is a method that creates a crease by pulling the eye-opening muscle, causing that area to fold inward.

Ptosis correction is a procedure needed for people whose black pupils are heavily covered when their eyes are open, making it difficult to open the eyes and causing them to use their forehead muscles to do so. In short, ptosis correction is a procedure that makes more of the black pupil visible.

The ptosis correction procedure shortens the eye-opening muscle by tying it shorter, which makes it easier to open the eyes. In doing so, it allows more of the black pupil to be seen using only the strength of the eye-opening muscles without relying on the forehead muscles.

Incisional and non-incisional

The method called natural adhesion, or non-incisional, is a way of making a small opening at the desired double eyelid line and letting the thread move back and forth through the opening to create adhesion. It is often also called eye stitching. Because of that, one advantage is that it feels less burdensome as a procedure.
However, a disadvantage is that for skin that is not suitable for the natural adhesion method, such as thick skin, a lot of fat, or weak eye-opening strength, if the non-incisional method is used, there is a higher chance that it will loosen over time.

The incisional method has better force transmission, and when there is a lot of skin covering the eyes, the covered area can be addressed by removing some skin. It can more easily change the area you want to improve, allowing for a clearer eye shape. A downside is that, although relative to the buried-suture method, the incision makes it feel somewhat more burdensome. Also, the recovery period can take longer than with the non-incisional method.

Is the non-incisional method always possible?
It can be said that the non-incisional method is not possible in all cases.
For people with thick skin or a large amount of fat, the incisional method is recommended. The reason is that, as mentioned earlier, there is a possibility that it may loosen over time.

Double eyelid surgery and ptosis correction are a set!!

It is not true that ptosis correction must always be done during double eyelid surgery.
It would be more accurate to say that ptosis correction can also be performed when having double eyelid surgery.

More patients than you might think come for consultations believing that ptosis correction is necessary because their black pupils are covered or because opening their eyes feels difficult. But in reality, there are also many cases where that is not true. Even so, if ptosis correction is performed simply because the patient says they need it, that could be considered overtreatment, so I would recommend getting 충분한 상담 from a specialist.
Ptosis correction can be done during double eyelid surgery, but it is not required!!

If the eyelids slightly cover the pupils, ptosis correction can be used to open up more of the black pupil and make the eyes look clearer. However, it is not necessary to make the pupils appear fully within the normal range through ptosis correction. This is a matter of what suits the image a person already has.
For example, in the case of BLACKPINK's Jennie, her eyes are not especially sharp; instead, her eyelids slightly cover her eyes, giving her a moodier image. Still, no one would recommend ptosis correction to make Jennie’s eyes look sharper, because it suits her overall image so well.
In other words, if the eyelids cover the eyes but it matches your own image, I think there is no need to do it.

There are also cases where the black pupil is fully visible when the eyes are open, so even though the medical staff said ptosis correction was not necessary, surgery was performed with the non-incisional method (natural adhesion) only, and the person ended up finding it harder to open their eyes than before.

In such cases, even if the double eyelid line is set at an appropriate height, the eye-opening strength may still be weak. Once the double eyelid line is created, the eyelids can become heavier, and the eye-opening muscles may not be strong enough to overcome that, causing the pupils to be covered.
Therefore, to achieve the desired result, an experienced medical team must make an accurate diagnosis and determine the strength of the eye-opening muscles.

Never do ptosis correction

When looking into ptosis correction, you may have heard many people say never do it, or that they do not recommend it.
The reason is the side effects and problems that can occur when ptosis correction is performed.
Some people develop headaches or a pulling sensation in the forehead area that makes daily life impossible. Since unbearable pain can occur, early correction should be performed in such cases.

If double eyelid surgery alone can make you attractive enough, you do not need ptosis correction. But if ptosis correction is needed, then having it done together can help create clearer-looking eyes.

We have taken time to look at the differences between double eyelid surgery and ptosis correction, as well as who they are for. Please remember that satisfactory results can only be expected when you consult with an experienced medical team that can accurately assess your eye condition, skin thickness, amount of fat, and eye-opening strength, and then proceed with the proper method.
