Baek In-soo, CEO of Apgujeong Garnet Plastic Surgery and a member of the Korean Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons, said, “To raise the bridge of the nose further, various artificial implants such as silicone and Gore-Tex are inserted, and it is also a good idea to know in advance before surgery that side effects can occur from such implants.”

◆ A representative side effect of rhinoplasty: contracted nose

When an implant is inserted, the body recognizes it as a foreign material and triggers an immune response, forming a thin capsule around it.

If the capsule settles stably, there is no problem, but if inflammation occurs, the capsule hardens, causing the nose to shrink and become stiff, and deformities such as excessive upward rotation of the nasal tip may appear. This condition is called a contracted nose and is considered one of the representative side effects of rhinoplasty.

◆ Revision surgery for a contracted nose

Revision surgery for a contracted nose can generally be performed 6 months to 1 year after the previous surgery.

First, the contracted nose symptoms must be treated and the implant that was previously used must be removed.

◆ Autologous dermis

Autologous dermis is located between the epidermal layer and the subcutaneous fat layer, and it can be harvested in the needed amount from areas such as the buttocks or thighs.

Because it is soft and highly elastic, it can be shaped freely like an implant, and after surgery it settles naturally, allowing for an improved appearance without looking overly surgical.

Autologous cartilage includes ear cartilage, septal cartilage, and costal cartilage, and because each type has different characteristics, the appropriate material should be selected according to the severity of the contracted nose when performing surgery.
