As the number of patients undergoing hair transplant surgery continues to increase, there are surely people who are curious about the phenomena that can occur after surgery.

Today, we will take some time to look at a few of the topics patients are most curious about among the various phenomena that occur after hair transplant surgery.

Q. What should I do if delayed bleeding occurs at the donor site in the back of the head after surgery?

When performing surgery, medication that constricts blood vessels is used on the donor site.

After about 6 hours have passed since the surgery is finished, the effects of the vasoconstrictor and anesthesia wear off and stop working,

so delayed bleeding can sometimes occur.

That is why some people are surprised to find blood flowing from the back of the head while going home after surgery.

In most cases, delayed bleeding like this stops with pressure.

This is because it is usually venous rather than arterial bleeding.

So, instead of using a pillow, place gauze, cotton, or absorbent cotton over a hard surface and press on the bleeding area for about 5 minutes while lying down,

or roll up gauze thickly and support it under the area, then lie flat. In most cases, the pressure on the bleeding site will stop the bleeding on its own.

If bleeding does not stop even after pressing on the surgical site, please contact the hospital where you had the surgery to find out what to do.

Q. How much swelling occurs after hair transplant surgery?

Swelling can occur in small amounts, but noticeable swelling is extremely rare, occurring only about one or two cases per month.

Even when a small amount of swelling occurs, it disappears after a day or two,

and if there is visible, significant swelling, it gradually moves downward over time and then subsides.

In such cases, visiting the hospital where you had surgery to receive an injection or medication can help resolve the swelling much more effectively and quickly.

Q. How long do scabs remain after surgery?

Scabs are different for the transplanted area and the donor area.

In the donor area, because you wash your hair right away, the scabs disappear about one week after washing your hair,

and in the transplanted area, patients are usually told not to touch it for about one week.

From one week after surgery to about two weeks, the scabs disappear as fingerprint shampooing begins.

By around two weeks, all scabs in both the transplanted and donor areas are usually gone.

That is why we usually advise visiting a hair salon for hair treatments about two weeks later.

Q. What should I do if I experience tightness or reduced sensation in the scalp?

Scalp tightness at the donor site often occurs in incision methods,

and reduced sensation can occur in both non-incision and incision methods, but it seems to be much more common with incision methods.

In the case of scalp tightness, in incision methods a skin flap is removed from the hair-bearing area, leaving an empty space, and that area is then pulled closed and sutured.

Because it is pulled and stitched closed, tightness that feels as if the skin is being pinched to keep it in place can last for several days and sometimes even more than a month.

This tightness improves over time as the skin gradually stretches.

And in the case of reduced sensation, when we touch our hair, we feel that we are touching the hair.

Because each hair has nerves attached to it, when the hairs are removed, each tiny peripheral nerve is damaged.

In such cases, reduced sensation can occur because the peripheral nerves that carry sensation are cut.

When reduced sensation occurs, there may be a period of tingling or unusual sensation, and although it takes some time, it gradually recovers.

Just because reduced sensation occurs does not mean that recovery is impossible, so there is no need to worry too much.

Q. Can I use a hair dryer when drying my hair?

Yes, you can use a hair dryer to dry your hair after hair transplant surgery.

However, very hot air may have a negative effect on the newly transplanted follicles,

so it is best to let your hair dry naturally or gently dry it using room-temperature air.
