Hello, this is Dana Plastic Surgery.
Today, we will take time to look at one of the most commonly asked questions and concerns: whether it is okay to take hair loss medication while preparing for pregnancy.

Q. If a man takes hair loss medication while preparing for pregnancy, is there a possibility of giving birth to a baby with birth defects?
If hair loss medication is taken during pregnancy preparation, there is a possibility of giving birth to a baby with birth defects.

A male baby with female reproductive organs, called “pseudohermaphroditism,” may be born.
Hair loss medication blocks the production of a hormone called DHT. DHT is an important hormone that helps form a baby’s external genitalia.

If there is a 5-alpha reductase inhibitor ingredient that prevents DHT from being produced, it can pass through the placenta to a male baby,
and because the 5-alpha reductase inhibitor suppresses the baby’s DHT inside the body,
the baby’s external genitalia may not develop.

Q. Should men also stop taking hair loss medication for pregnancy preparation?
Even if you are planning to conceive, I am telling you that it is not necessary to stop taking the medication.

Because a lot of data has already been accumulated through papers and clinical results so far,
I would not say that you absolutely have to stop taking it.

However, for those who feel uneasy even about a very small chance and want to stop taking it,
I recommend stopping at least one month in advance and preparing for pregnancy with peace of mind.

Q. Is it not okay for a pregnant woman to even touch hair loss medication?

The hair loss medications commonly used today are well coated, so there is no problem just from touching them.
However, for those who are worried, if it is not really necessary, it may be better not to touch them.

Q. For women, can they use Rogaine Foam or minoxidil before and after pregnancy?

First, for women of childbearing age, we can say that there are no hair loss medications that can be taken orally,
and for women, since there are no medications that can be taken when hair loss progresses,
there is no established accurate data showing that using topical treatments (Rogaine Foam, minoxidil) causes birth defects
or results in the birth of a baby with birth defects.
So, at present, we can say that Rogaine Foam and minoxidil do not have any effect on the fetus.

However, for those who are worried about this as well, or those who want to plan their pregnancy with peace of mind, I think it would be good to say that minoxidil and Rogaine Foam should also be discontinued.

It is not a problem for women of childbearing age or young women to apply Rogaine Foam or minoxidil.
However, once a child is conceived, it is not recommended for a pregnant woman to apply Rogaine Foam or minoxidil.

Today, we took time to look at the relationship between hair loss medication and pregnancy.
If you take the medication while following the information mentioned above, it can be very helpful.
