Hello 😊 This is Dana Plastic Surgery.
Today, we’re going to talk about a question many people ask before a hair transplant:
Can you still get a hair transplant even if there is a scar on your head?

Having a wound on your head does not mean hair transplant surgery is impossible.
What kind of characteristics your scar has can only be determined through an examination.

If the scar is hard, rough, and the tissue is uneven, the graft survival rate may be a little lower.
However, having a scar does not mean no hair will grow after a hair transplant.
Unless it is a very severe scar, hair will grow in most cases.

The size of the wound and hair transplantation are not closely related.

Even for patients who come in with burn scars covering about half of the scalp, we sometimes perform large-scale transplants of 3,000 to 4,000 grafts.

Also, for people who have scars on their head, a hair transplant can provide a good effect by covering the scar area.

If the scar is still not well covered even after a hair transplant, scalp micropigmentation can also be done together.
In the past, tattooing was often performed, but these days it is not something we strongly recommend.
In the case of scar tattooing, when observed over a long period, the tattoo ink pigment can change.

There are cases where it moves or spreads to the surrounding area, so it is not something we actively recommend.
Also, compared with tattooing, hair transplantation creates volume,
so it can cover the scar area well.
That is why we recommend hair transplantation more.

In addition, even for small scars on the eyebrow, transplanting into that area can help cover the scar.
However, because the transplanted hair keeps growing, that area will need to be trimmed separately.

Q. If hair loss is also progressing and there is a scar on the head, is there any problem with getting a hair transplant?
To give the conclusion first, there is no problem.

Because grafting can be done both in the scar area and for hair loss at the same time,
please be sure to mention the scar area before the transplant.

💥Summary💥
Hair transplant surgery is possible even if there is a scar.
- If the scar is too hard or uneven, the graft survival rate may decrease,
but it does not mean no hair will grow at all.
The size of the scar is not very closely related to hair transplantation.
- Scalp micropigmentation is not actively recommended because the ink pigment may change,
but it can be a good option for people who do not want a transplant.
