Hello, this is Dana Plastic Surgery 😊

Today, we will clearly explain whether taking hair loss medication increases or decreases male hormone levels, which many people are curious about.

When you take hair loss medication, male hormone levels actually go up.
Sex hormones are, simply put, hormones that make men masculine and women feminine.

Testosterone is converted into another form called DHT by 5-alpha reductase,
and this gives it different roles in the body.

The hormone called DHT helps form the external genitalia while in the mother's body,
and in adulthood, it acts not on the outside but on the inside, such as enlarging the prostate, or contributing to hair loss.

On the other hand, testosterone, while in the mother's body,
is involved in the development of the testes and other internal reproductive organs rather than the external genitalia,
and after puberty, it is the hormone that brings about secondary sexual characteristics such as enlargement of the male external genitalia,
appearance of pubic hair, and a deeper voice.

After puberty, the hormone DHT causes hair loss.
It happens when testosterone is converted by the 5-alpha reductase enzyme, leading to hair loss.

In hormone metabolism,
there is a preceding substance and a subsequent substance,
and if the subsequent substance (DHT) is abundant, the preceding substance (testosterone) is produced in smaller amounts.
Also, if the subsequent substance (DHT) is not produced, the preceding substance (testosterone) accumulates.

When using the commonly prescribed medications Propecia and Avodart,
DHT is not produced, so testosterone accumulates.

So when you take hair loss medication, testosterone actually goes up.

When taking Avodart, blood testosterone levels rise while DHT levels fall.

To mention another piece of data, in the Dominican Republic, researchers also studied patient groups with a genetic disorder in which 5-alpha reductase is not produced at all,
and confirmed that testosterone was elevated.

We can conclude that when 5-alpha reductase is inhibited, testosterone rises significantly.
