Hello, this is Dana Plastic Surgery 😊

When you think, “Should I get hairline correction?” and go in for a consultation,
some people are surprised that the number of grafts is higher than expected.
You may wonder, “It seems like only a small amount would be enough, so why do they take so many grafts?”
Let’s take a look at that question.

Q. Which areas are suitable for a small amount of grafting?
There are quite a few areas where small-volume grafting is possible.
These days, many women have a wide side area, so side hair transplantation is often performed.
So the side area can be treated with a small amount, and

when sideburns are lost after midface lifting surgery,
or when only the sideburns are transplanted, it can also be done with a small amount.

When the M-shaped recession is very mild and only the corners need to be covered, and
when a slightly irregular hairline is being tidied up,
or after forehead reduction surgery, if the scar stands out too much,
surgery to cover only the scar can also be done with a small amount of grafting.

Q. From how many grafts is it considered a small amount?
When doing small-volume grafting, as few as about 200 to 300 follicles can be used.
In the case of sideburns, about 300 follicles at most is enough,
and if the side area is included as well, about 500 follicles is a reasonable estimate.
When we say “small amount,” it usually refers to fewer than 500 to 1,000 follicles.

Q. If it is a small-volume procedure, why are so many grafts harvested?
In cases of M-shaped hair loss, we may say anywhere from as few as 2,000 hairs to as many as over 3,000 hairs,
and many people are surprised by the number of grafts because it is more than they expected.

In the case of an M shape, the inner area needs volume,
so more hair may be needed than you might think.

However, when only the side area, sideburns, or the front hairline are being treated slightly,
it is not about needing volume, but about transplanting lightly so that the skin is covered,
which is why many cases can be done with a small amount.

Q. “Can I ask for only this much to be transplanted?” Is that possible?
Yes, it is.
In that case, rather than making the design too aggressive,
we focus only on the person’s biggest concern,
and even just gently rounding a angular forehead can create a much more feminine image.

When hairline correction is done together with hair loss treatment,
the part line often appears sparse in a Christmas tree pattern,
so small-volume grafting is performed only in the slightly wider areas that lack volume,
and scalp micropigmentation is done on the broader areas where the scalp is more visible,
which can help reduce the number of grafts needed.
💥Summary💥

[Typical areas for small-volume grafting]
Side area | Sideburns | Hairline

[How many grafts count as a small amount?]
Usually 500 follicles to 100 follicles

[Ways to reduce the number of transplanted hairs]
-
Focus on your own concerns and do a small-volume transplant
-
After a small-volume transplant, use scalp micropigmentation in areas that do not need volume
