Hello! This is Dana Plastic Surgery!
Today, for those looking into body hair transplantation,
we’ll take some time to discuss step-by-step large-scale transplantation using body hair.
Body hair transplantation?

Today, we prepared content that may be helpful for people with more severe hair loss, beyond Norwood stage 4 or 5, who are considering large-scale transplantation!

When performing a large-scale transplant, Koreans need to make good use of beard hair.
And it should be possible to cover areas lacking hair using scalp micropigmentation,
and if a large amount has been harvested from the occipital area, covering the non-incision punch extraction sites with scalp micropigmentation can be very helpful.
Large-scale transplantation?

Large-scale transplantation generally refers to transplanting 3,000 follicular units or more.
For Koreans, who have fewer hairs, 2,500 follicular units is considered large-scale transplantation.
However, since there is no fixed standard for defining large-scale transplantation,
transplants of roughly this amount are generally referred to as large-scale transplantation.

In fact, looking at the definition established by the Terminology Committee of the Korean Hair Restoration Society,
2,500 follicular units or more can also be considered large-scale transplantation for Koreans.
Body hair transplantation

With body hair transplantation, all body hair on our body can be transplanted.
However, for Koreans who do not have much body hair, the body hair with meaningful transplant value is beard hair!

Looking at the Norwood classification chart for hair loss stages, this mainly applies to people around stage 4 and above.
Follicular units needed by hair loss stage
(For easier viewing, we organized the follicular units needed by hair loss stage into a table, so please check it visually!!)

However, the number of follicular units can vary depending on the thickness of the hair the person has, hairstyle, head shape, skin type,
whether scalp micropigmentation has been done, and past history.

But this kind of large-scale transplantation is a story that applies to West Asians or people from the Middle East,
such as India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh, where there is a lot of body hair.
Therefore, if you do not have much body hair, it is true that approaching large-scale transplantation realistically is difficult.

Although it varies from person to person, if a Korean person is trying to undergo large-scale transplantation, follicular units are generally harvested from the occipital area.
If follicular units are harvested from the occipital area, 3,000 follicular units can usually be obtained without difficulty,
and if the scalp condition is good, up to 4,000 follicular units may be obtained.
However, it is rare for more than 4,000 follicular units to be obtained in a single surgery.

4,000 follicular units is the upper limit of what can be obtained in one surgery, and additional follicular units can be harvested during a second surgery.
However, if the Norwood stage is stage 5, 4,000 follicular units are needed!
If 3,000 follicular units were harvested from the occipital area, where should the remaining 1,000 follicular units come from?!

In this case, if there is beard hair, the follicular units other than those harvested from the occipital area can be harvested from the beard and transplanted!
However, the amount of beard and scalp hair is determined by each case, including hair thickness, head shape, beard type, and so on.
Successful case of body hair transplantation and large-scale transplantation!

The case above involved body hair transplantation using beard hair.
About 800 follicular units were harvested from the beard + about 2,700 follicular units from the occipital area,
for a total of about 3,500 follicular units transplanted!
However, some people worry that if beard hair is transplanted, it may differ from the existing hair,
but you do not need to worry, because transplanting beard hair does not create a noticeable difference.
People who have beard hair can undergo hair transplant surgery through body hair transplantation by harvesting and transplanting beard hair.

There are only a few specialized clinics in Korea that harvest and transplant beard hair,
so before proceeding with body hair transplantation, it is very important to check carefully whether the clinic has the necessary expertise before undergoing surgery!!
On the Dana Plastic Surgery YouTube channel, we also have videos of the body hair transplantation and large-scale transplantation success cases introduced today.
