Hello
This is Dana Plastic Surgery!
This time,
let’s take a look at
what GQI is!
What is GQI, the evaluation of follicle condition?

It seems to be an indicator for evaluating the
condition of harvested non-shaven follicles,
but what is GQI?

GQI is the morphological classification of non-shaven harvested follicles.

GQI is divided into 4 classes,
and the closer it is to 1, the better it is; the closer it is to 4, the worse it is.

Grade 1 means the follicle has been cut or damaged, but is smooth and normal in shape,
with abundant tissue attached beneath the hair bulb.

Grade 2 is similar to Grade 1,
but there is less tissue around the follicle and no tissue beneath the hair bulb.

Grade 3 is a condition in which the lower half or one-third of the follicle is poor.

Grade 4 is a state in which some follicular damage is present.
The margin of the follicle is uneven and irregular, and the damaged follicle appears protruding.

Robert H. True said,
non-shaven follicles are to obtain follicles with a shape similar to or identical to those obtained by excision,
and named this morphological classification GQI,
stating that it is used to evaluate follicles
and hoping that it will be used by all hair transplant doctors.

It means that evaluation is based on the average GQI score.

It is said that the shape of these follicles is related to surgical outcomes
and can guide the appropriate transplant method,
and there is a reason for thinking this way.

When transplanting while holding with forceps,
the area around the hair bulb must have plenty of fat or tissue
so it is easier to grab it with forceps and place it in a slit method.

Grade 3 and 4 are difficult to transplant with forceps.

If you use DNI, an implantation pen, you can safely transplant the follicles.

With forceps-slit, there is a much greater risk that one side of the follicle’s legs protrudes outward, bends, and dies.
We will look into the details more next time.
