365 Seoul One Top Dental Clinic - Director Kim Geun-il
Hello.
I am dentist Kim Geun-il.
When you visit a dental clinic for implant consultation,
have you ever heard that a sinus lift is needed?
Many patients
may have felt worried
when hearing an unfamiliar term for the first time.
Today, let’s take some time to
learn about sinus lifts.
What Is a Sinus Lift?

Above the molars on the left and right sides of the upper jaw,
there is an air-filled empty space,
and this area is called the maxillary sinus.
If the upper teeth have been missing for a long time,
the alveolar bone is resorbed and gradually becomes thinner.
At the same time, the maxillary sinus moves downward
and expands,
and in such cases, there may be a shortage of bone.
A sinus lift is a surgery performed to create space
for implant placement by lifting the sinus membrane and performing bone grafting
when the amount of upper jaw bone is insufficient
and the stability of the implant to be placed is judged to be inadequate.
How a Sinus Lift Is Performed
Ganseo-gu Implant
The methods for performing a sinus lift
are divided into two types: the crestal approach and the lateral approach.
Before surgery, a panoramic X-ray and 3D CT scan
are used to determine which method will be used.
The most important thing to remember is that
the approach used for a sinus lift may differ
depending on how much residual alveolar bone remains.

Crestal Approach
This method is generally used when the height of the alveolar bone is 5 mm or more.
It accesses the maxillary sinus from the crown direction of the tooth,
lifts the sinus membrane,
and performs bone grafting in that area.
Because the incision area is relatively small,
pain and swelling are also comparatively limited.
However, since the sinus can be lifted only by about 3 to 4 mm,
the amount of bone grafting is also limited.

Lateral Approach
This is generally used when the height of the alveolar bone is 5 mm or less,
and the bone is very insufficient.
The surgeon makes a lateral approach from the side of the gum,
creates a window in the lateral wall of the maxillary sinus,
lifts the sinus membrane,
and performs bone grafting below it.
It can be performed while directly viewing the area,
and unlike the crestal approach,
it allows the desired amount of bone grafting to be placed.
However, because an incision in the gum is required,
and the surgery is more difficult than the crestal approach,
there may be discomfort due to postoperative pain and swelling.

Precautions After a Sinus Lift
Ganseo-gu Implant
After surgery, for the first 1 to 2 months,
it is important to manage yourself by following the precautions
so that the sinus can recover stably.
- If you blow your nose forcefully or sneeze strongly after surgery,
pressure may be applied to the sinus membrane and cause damage.
When sneezing, please keep your mouth open.
- If you have a nosebleed for about 2 to 3 days,
it is blood that was pooled during surgery and is flowing out,
so you can gently wipe it away or block it with cotton.
-
Please do not use a straw.
-
Please absolutely refrain from drinking alcohol and smoking.
In particular, smoking interferes with blood flow and delays the regeneration of the grafted bone.
- Please be careful about pressure changes.
Activities such as flying on an airplane or scuba diving
may affect the sinus due to internal pressure differences.
-
Please be sure to take the prescribed medication after surgery.
-
Please eat mainly soft and lukewarm foods.

Sinus Lift: Do It with Skilled Medical Staff with Diverse Clinical Experience
Ganseo-gu Implant
A sinus lift is not a surgery that is always necessary,
and it may be performed when there is too little bone for implant placement in the upper molars
and implant stabilization is judged to be difficult.
Compared with general bone grafting, it is a more difficult procedure,
and because it is also connected to the lifespan of the implant,
we strongly recommend that you work with skilled medical staff
who have experience with various clinical cases of high-difficulty implant surgery.
Also, if there is a related condition in this area,
such as sinusitis or maxillary sinusitis,
a specialist opinion from an otolaryngologist may be needed before performing a sinus lift,
so please be sure to mention this in advance when consulting with your attending doctor.
Have your questions about sinus lifts been somewhat resolved?
There are various treatment methods that can make implant surgery possible even when there is insufficient alveolar bone,
so do not give up too quickly,
and first check your condition through 충분한 consultation with medical staff.
I hope you do not give up the joy of eating
and the bright smile on your face.
