Today, I’d like to explain what I consider important and what I check first during an implant consultation.

Dr. Kim Geun-il of 365 Seoul One Top Dental Clinic
Hello, I’m dentist Kim Geun-il.
Because Gayang-dong is relatively close to Hwagok-dong,
people who live in Gayang-dong visit a dental clinic in Gayang-dong,
and some also come to our clinic for implant consultations.
Among many other patients who come from different areas,
some are having an implant consultation for the first time,
while quite a few have already consulted at another dental clinic
or even completed a CT scan before coming here.
Patients with prior implant consultation experience often say to us,
“Doctor, looking at my condition,
don’t I just need to get an implant?”
Every time I hear this question,
I try not to start by explaining the treatment plan right away.
Since they came for an implant consultation,
it may seem a little puzzling that I do not immediately explain the treatment plan.
But before meeting the patient,
I try to take a moment to organize my thoughts,
greet the patient,
and take another look at their face.
That’s because I think an implant consultation is not just a time to talk about whether treatment is possible,
but a time to decide together whether now is the right time for it.

I try to understand the patient’s feelings during implant consultations at the Gayang-dong dental clinic
What I look at first during an implant consultation
I try to understand the patient’s feelings through their facial expressions and tone of voice
When I conduct an implant consultation,
what I check first is not the CT images or bone thickness,
but the patient’s facial expressions, tone of voice,
and hesitation.
As they listen to the explanation about implants,
whether they keep taking deep breaths,
whether they stop speaking just as they are about to ask a question—
in these small reactions,
the anxiety and burden the patient is feeling often become clearly visible.
Implants are a treatment that can become much harder throughout the entire process
if a decision is made before the patient’s mind is ready.

A decision made while anxious is unlikely to lead to good treatment
Let me share a case of a patient who recently visited our clinic for an implant consultation after going to a Gayang-dong dental clinic
Recently, after visiting a Gayang-dong dental clinic,
a patient came to our clinic for an implant consultation after thinking they should visit one or two more places.
After hearing about implants,
the patient searched the internet a lot,
and said that the worry about dental treatment
actually made them even more anxious.
Among the people who come for implant consultations,
some come after hearing a lot about implants from people around them,
some, like the patient in the case above,
become even more anxious after reading information on the internet,
and some make a rushed appointment after hearing,
“If you don’t do it now, it will get worse.”
In cases like this, rather than immediately scheduling treatment,
I first think like this:
‘This person needs their mind comforted
before the treatment.’
There are cases where implants are not a treatment that must be rushed.
If the situation is one where waiting a little longer is reasonable,
I tell them honestly to think it through carefully
so they do not later regret having made a hasty decision.
Making a quick decision is not necessarily the wrong approach,
but since an implant is still a surgery,
I believe it should be decided carefully.
“ If you have many concerns about implant treatment,
it’s okay not to do it right now.
Please think it through 충분히,
and if you still have questions or have made up your mind,
please come back again.”
After hearing this,
some patients actually look relieved.
Rather than the fact that they postponed a decision,
they seem relieved that the choice is still in their own hands.

Three criteria I consider important during implant consultations
The criteria I check during implant consultations at a dental clinic near Gayang-dong are
When I conduct an implant consultation,
the three main criteria I always check are:
First, the nature of the discomfort they are currently feeling.
I first distinguish whether it is pain, a problem with chewing function,
or whether anxiety and worry are the bigger issue.
If anxiety and worry are the root of the discomfort,
some patients, because they are not emotionally stable,
may become overly worried that even a small amount of pain after treatment
means something is wrong.
In such cases, I try to ease the patient’s anxiety
and help them feel at ease during treatment.
Second, whether they can manage life after treatment.
That’s because implant treatment does not end with the procedure;
it is a treatment that continues with maintenance and follow-up visits.
Of course, this does not mean visiting the dental clinic so often
that it disrupts daily life.
However, when an implant is placed directly into the jawbone,
that is not the end—
we monitor whether osseointegration is progressing well,
and the patient comes back at intervals of about one or two months
to decide whether to move on to the next stage.
Also, even after an implant has been completed successfully,
it is not over;
it can last a long time only if it is managed continuously through regular checkups.
Because patients need to understand this well too,
I always explain it clearly.
Third, whether this decision is the patient’s own choice.
If it is a decision pushed by the opinions of people around them
or by the general atmosphere rather than their own will,
I tend to give them more time.
In the end, the person receiving treatment is the patient,
and if the decision was made under pressure without wanting it,
their level of cooperation with treatment may change.

The moment of judgment is important in implant treatment
I try to ensure that my implant treatment does not remain as regret in the patient’s mind.
These days, implant technology has advanced greatly,
so if you look only at the procedure itself,
it may seem that there is not a big difference.
But in reality, satisfaction with treatment varies greatly depending on when,
under what condition,
and by what criteria the decision was made.
That is why, before the CT scan or the cost,
I first look at whether this treatment is truly needed right now.
If this judgment wavers,
even technically excellent treatment will not stay long in the patient’s mind.

It’s okay not to decide immediately after an implant consultation
If you are worried after an implant consultation at a Gayang-dong dental clinic....
Among those reading this post,
there may be people who have already visited several dental clinics,
including those near Gangseo-gu and Gayang-dong dental clinics,
but still have not been able to make a decision.
That is completely normal.
Implants are a treatment you are allowed to think about carefully.
It is not too late to think a little more,
learn a little more,
and then make your decision.
I think an implant consultation is a time to understand your current condition accurately
and receive help in making a treatment decision.
So when you are worried about implant treatment,
rather than only searching online for information,
I would like to say that you should first make sure to get a consultation about your own condition.
If it is a treatment you do not need to do today,
wouldn’t it be fine to have at least one dentist who tells you that?
Because of the cold wave, this winter has been extremely cold all week.
I pray that all of you reading this post
have a healthy week.
I will continue to do my best for proper implant treatment today as well
in Hwagok-dong, next to Gayang-dong.
Thank you for reading.
