What Is a One-Day Implant?

A one-day implant places the implant immediately after extraction.

A conventional implant procedure usually waits 2 to 3 months after tooth extraction for the gum bone to fill in before placing the implant.

However, a one-day implant is a highly advanced procedure in which "extraction - implant placement - temporary prosthesis attachment" is completed in just one day.

In other words, it is also called an immediate implant placement after extraction.

It can be described as a modern implant surgery that eliminates the gap period without teeth and dramatically reduces the number of visits.

Why One-Day Implants Are Special

One-day implants make it possible to restore missing teeth immediately.

1. Aesthetic results without waiting

Because a temporary tooth is made and attached on the day of surgery, even areas where appearance matters, such as the front teeth, can be restored immediately.

2. Maximized preservation of the alveolar bone

If an implant is placed immediately after a tooth is extracted, it minimizes the resorption of the jawbone, helping maintain a more natural gum line.

3. Reduced physical and psychological burden

Because the number of anesthetics and surgeries is reduced, this is often preferred by people who fear pain or by patients who need to minimize physical exhaustion.

4. Precise digital planning

Because it goes through simulated surgery based on 3D CT and intraoral scanner data, placement errors are reduced to a minimum.

Treatment Process for One-Day Implants

A precise diagnosis before one-day implant placement is essential.

One-day implants are carried out according to a thorough pre-treatment plan as follows.

1. Precise diagnosis (Pre-op)

Using 3D digital equipment such as panoramic X-rays, CT scans, and intraoral scanners, the amount of alveolar bone, bone density, and the location of the nerve canal are analyzed in three dimensions.

2. Extraction and placement (D-Day)

At the same time the problematic tooth is extracted, the implant is placed immediately at the predesigned position.

If necessary, bone grafting may also be performed during the surgery.

3. Temporary prosthesis attachment

Immediately after placement, a customized temporary tooth is attached to fill the empty space.

4. Final prosthesis completion

After osseointegration is firmly established,

the temporary prosthesis is replaced with a durable final prosthesis such as zirconia.

When One-Day Implants Are Difficult

Many of the patients who received implant treatment at our clinic underwent treatment using the one-day implant method,

but the one-day method cannot be applied to every case.

In the following cases, a standard step-by-step approach that allows enough healing time is necessary.

1. When severe periodontitis is present

If inflammation around the gums is severe, it interferes with the implant bonding to the bone. In this case, inflammation treatment and bone grafting must come first.

2. When there is too little jawbone

If the remaining bone volume that supports the implant is significantly insufficient, it is difficult to achieve immediate fixation after placement.

3. When chronic diseases are not well controlled

Patients with uncontrolled diabetes, high blood pressure, or those taking osteoporosis medication need caution because osseointegration is slower.

However, having a systemic disease does not automatically mean one-day implant surgery is impossible, so before treatment, we recommend having 충분한 discussion with your attending physician and proceeding with dental treatment accordingly.

4. When there are harmful habits such as teeth grinding

If excessive force is applied to the temporary tooth attached on the day of surgery, the chance of initial fixation failure increases.
