Why are prices different for the same implant?
This is Kim Geun-il, the chief dentist at 365 Seoul One Top Dental Clinic, sharing my thoughts.
Recently, perhaps because the weather has gotten warmer,
these days have become busier in the treatment room.
When I conduct implant consultations,
I often hear similar questions.
"Why do prices differ from one dental clinic to another for the same implant?"
"Is there a big difference between domestic and imported ones?"
“Is the more expensive one better?”
“Are domestic ones okay?”
If I were in the patient’s position,
I would also have many concerns,
because it is something that comes into direct contact with my body.

Is implant pricing simply about the materials?
Many patients think implant costs are
simply due to differences in material prices.
In reality, the overall treatment plan changes depending on
the condition of the patient’s jawbone,
the difficulty of the implant surgery,
and whether additional treatment is needed.
-
Implant system used (domestic/imported)
-
Patient’s jawbone condition and surgical difficulty
-
Whether additional treatment is needed (such as bone grafting)
Even for the same implant,
the treatment process itself changes depending on
how and to whom it is applied.

Are domestic and imported implants simply different in appearance? I’ll explain the features of each.
Differences between domestic and imported implants
The most common topic during consultations is
domestic implants and imported implants.
I think this is probably the part
many people are most curious about.
However,
rather than saying one side is always better,
it is important to understand the characteristics of each.
Domestic implants (Osstem, etc.)
-
Over 20 years of clinical data accumulated
-
Designed to suit the bone quality of Koreans
-
Relatively reasonable cost
-
Fast parts supply and aftercare response
Imported implants (Straumann, etc.)
-
Over 50 years of long-term clinical data
-
(Can provide stable results even in complex cases
-
where bone condition is not favorable)
-
Extensive global clinical experience
-
Strengths in surface treatment technology (osseointegration)
-
Pricing shaped by brand trust

What is the difference between domestic and imported implants?
✔ Why are imported ones more expensive?
Global brands such as Straumann are often developed
based on long-accumulated clinical data
over more than 50 years
and special surface treatment technology.
In particular, when bone condition is poor
or when there are systemic diseases such as diabetes or osteoporosis,
they may be a slightly more stable option,
so they tend to be priced higher.
✔ Why domestic implants are considered “reasonable”
Although their history is relatively shorter,
domestic implants have also shown rapid growth
over the past 20-plus years and continued to develop,
and now their technology has become strong enough
to be recognized in the global market.
Also, because they are domestic implants,
parts supply and maintenance are fast.
These factors add up
to the advantage of reducing cost burden.
What are the “hidden factors” that determine implant costs?
Even with the same domestic or imported implant,
costs can vary depending on the details.

Implant surface treatment method
As there are various implant manufacturers,
the surface treatment methods of implants
also vary.
Whether UV treatment or special coating is used
affects the speed and stability of osseointegration,
which allows the implant and jawbone to fuse well.

Abutment
An abutment is
one of the components of an implant that connects
the implant artificial root (fixture)
and the crown.
Depending on whether a ready-made product is used
or a custom abutment tailored to the patient’s gum line
is fabricated,
there are differences in precision and cost.

Prosthetic material
Depending on the prosthetic material,
such as zirconia or PFM,
differences may occur.

Use of digital equipment
When performing precise procedures
to reduce placement error,
a guide may be needed in some cases.
In other words, rather than simply asking
“Which brand is it?”
the cost can vary depending on the overall treatment plan.
What matters most is the patient’s jawbone condition
and overall health.

If the bone condition is good,
satisfactory results can be expected even with a domestic implant,
but if the bone is weak
or faster recovery is needed,
an imported implant with proven stability
may be more advantageous.
For implants,
more important than brand choice
is
"who places it."
No matter how good the ingredients are,
the taste of the final dish can change depending on
which chef prepares it,
and implants are also greatly affected by
the medical team’s technical skill in accurately understanding
the patient’s oral structure
and placing the implant.
Rather than comparing prices alone,
it is important to hear enough explanation about
why the cost was set this way
and which treatment method is right for you,
before making a choice.
Comfortable implants, just like my own teeth,
don’t worry about it alone.
I will do my best so that we can think it through together.
