A wise choice that suits your eyes,
Do you know about “pseudoptosis”?
Among those who visit a plastic surgery clinic,
many come in suspecting ptosis symptoms
because their eyes look sleepy or heavy.

A 22-year-old female patient also visited our clinic
after being diagnosed with ptosis at another hospital
and being recommended buried-suture surgery and non-incisional eyelid correction.
After carefully examining the patient’s eyes,
it appeared at first glance that the eyelids were drooping
like ptosis, but in fact
there was no problem with the strength of the muscle that opens the eyes.
This was judged to be “pseudoptosis,” in which
the eyelid skin sags and covers the pupils.
Pseudoptosis may look similar to true ptosis
on the surface, but because the underlying cause is different,
the approach must also be different.
![[Eye Plastic Surgery] Pseudoptosis: How to Avoid Unnecessary Eyelid Correction image 2](https://pub-9f2bb3498faf4d1d8714b41df24753e3.r2.dev/content/clinics/archive/8mx1evuht6/naver_blog/eyestory8538/assets/by_hash/c5dd88fec27e503d68b66e06580c532c48de9fdb051b8c2e5d1b32149b1f2182.jpg)
Ptosis is a condition in which
the eyelid droops downward because the function of the muscle that opens the eyes (the levator palpebrae superioris) has weakened,
and the key is to strengthen this muscle
through eyelid correction surgery.
On the other hand, pseudoptosis is
mainly caused by sagging skin,
so creating a refreshed,
clearer eye shape may be possible with double eyelid surgery alone
by appropriately removing the excess skin.
![[Eye Plastic Surgery] Pseudoptosis: How to Avoid Unnecessary Eyelid Correction image 3](https://pub-9f2bb3498faf4d1d8714b41df24753e3.r2.dev/content/clinics/archive/8mx1evuht6/naver_blog/eyestory8538/assets/by_hash/0fe4ef621e6858c664445d5ce17ec9e4a85a2116687ad4d56244db20c17f354b.jpg)
In this patient’s case,
there was also a mild presence of scleral show symptoms
(a condition where the white of the eye is visible above, below,
or to the sides of the iris),
so we determined that satisfactory results could be achieved
even with double eyelid surgery alone to remove the sagging skin.
If unnecessary eyelid correction surgery is performed,
it may cause side effects such as the eyes becoming excessively large
or looking unnatural like a “surprised rabbit,”
and of course, there would also be additional cost.
Therefore, if you are considering eye plastic surgery,
don’t simply assume it is ptosis;
it is important to receive an accurate diagnosis of your eye condition
through a thorough consultation with an experienced specialist.
Please remember that carefully analyzing each person’s eye structure and features
and choosing only the surgeries that are truly necessary
is the wisest way to achieve safe and natural results.
An accurate diagnosis that fits your eyes is the first step toward successful eye plastic surgery.
