After performing only eye surgeries for nearly 30 years, I have come to hold one guiding principle.

A good result is not created by the operating doctor alone.

Today, I would like to speak honestly about the fact that the patient’s cooperation during surgery can affect the result to some extent.

Why We Continue Checking the Eyes During Surgery

Eye plastic surgery is performed while directly checking the patient’s eye condition at various points throughout the procedure.

Repeatedly asking questions such as “Please open your eyes,” “Are you comfortable right now?” and “Where are you uncomfortable?” is not a merely formal procedure.

It is a process for checking and adjusting in real time whether the height of the eyelids, the balance of the crease, and the sensation of opening the eyes are appropriate.

For this reason, I personally prefer to perform surgery under local anesthesia.

This is because the checking process itself is difficult while under sedation.

Of course, sedation may be unavoidable for patients with severe fear of surgery. However, when both safety and precision of the result are taken into consideration, local anesthesia is often the better choice.

Please Tell Us Immediately If You Feel the Anesthesia Wearing Off

As surgery takes longer, the anesthesia may gradually wear off, causing a stiff or pulling sensation.

If you feel pain at this point, please do not hesitate to tell us immediately.

You do not get a good result by enduring pain during surgery.

Rather, letting us know that you are in pain allows us to administer additional anesthesia and continue the procedure smoothly.

Hearing sounds and feeling your eyelids being pulled and released are natural parts of the surgical process.

It is understandable that this process may feel unfamiliar and unsettling.

However, please trust that this is not intended to make you uncomfortable, but is a necessary process for achieving a better result.

Overly Sensitive Reactions Can Affect the Result

There are occasional cases in which patients react strongly to a slight pulling sensation, shout, or move abruptly during surgery.

In such situations, it is true that I may hesitate even when thinking, “The result could be prettier if I do a little more.”

It is both natural and necessary to tell us when something is uncomfortable.

However, due to the nature of surgery, a certain amount of pulling or stiffness cannot be avoided.

If you can accept that level of discomfort with a little composure, I can concentrate much more fully on the surgery as the operating doctor.

Your cooperation can make a practical contribution to creating natural-looking eyes.

You Need to Explain the Direction You Want During the Consultation

The consultation before surgery is also an important process that can influence the result.

You need to describe specifically what kind of eyes you want so that I can properly explain whether it is possible based on your current eye condition and which method is appropriate.

Eye plastic surgery is a process planned and determined by a specialist, but it begins with understanding what each patient wants.
