Recently, GLP-1 class injections for obesity management and weight loss have been drawing a lot of attention.
Among them, two representative medications are
Mounjaro and Wegovy.
Although their names are similar, they differ in purpose, effectiveness,
and how they are used, so choosing the one that fits each patient
is important.
Feature Comparison

Mounjaro
In the beginning, side effects such as nausea and indigestion
may occur, so it is important to plan dose adjustment and
management together with medical staff.
In particular, during the weight loss process,
effects have been reported that help minimize muscle loss and promote
fat-based weight reduction,
making it advantageous not only for simple weight loss but also for
healthy body composition management.
Wegovy
With Wegovy, weight loss effects appear within 4 to 6 weeks after
starting treatment,
so patients can relatively quickly feel the changes.
It is also suitable for patients at high health risk due to weight,
such as those with high blood pressure, diabetes, or fatty liver,
or when rapid weight loss is absolutely necessary.

👉In summary,
Mounjaro = benefits for healthy body composition management and muscle preservation
Wegovy = rapid weight loss and advantageous for patients with metabolic diseases
Injection Frequency and Convenience

How to Use Mounjaro
It can be conveniently administered as a once-weekly injection,
and the dose can be adjusted gradually from 2.5 mg to 15 mg.
However, higher-dose products of 7.5 mg and 10 mg are
affected by supply shortages and are expected to be introduced in Korea
after mid-October.
The 12.5 mg and 15 mg doses
have not yet been launched in Korea,
and future introduction is planned.
It is currently used as a single-use pen, but
a multi-use pen is expected to be released around the end of 2025,
which is expected to further improve patient convenience.
At first, treatment can begin with a low dose
and be adjusted to allow the body to adapt, while balancing
weight loss effects and side effects.

How to Use Wegovy
It is convenient as a once-weekly injection,
and the dose is clearly guided with gradual increases in order:
0.25 mg ➡️ 0.5 mg ➡️ 1.0 mg ➡️ 1.7 mg ➡️ 2.4 mg.
A multi-use pen formulation has already been released,
and the convenience of being able to use one pen over the course of a month
is a major advantage.
Side Effects

Common side effects that may occur
Both Mounjaro and Wegovy may cause symptoms such as
nausea, vomiting, indigestion, and loss of appetite,
especially in the early stages when weight loss effects are related.
Some patients may also experience temporary fatigue,
diarrhea, or abdominal discomfort.
In most cases, these side effects lessen as the body adapts
through gradual dose increases,
and the medication’s effects can be maintained more steadily.
Differences Between Mounjaro and Wegovy
🔷 Wegovy
Gastrointestinal side effects are relatively more common,
so they may affect daily life in the early stage.
🔷 Mounjaro
It may cause itching or redness at the injection site,
and gastrointestinal side effects are relatively
milder than with Wegovy.

Mounjaro and Wegovy each have their own advantages and disadvantages,
and the types of patients they are suited for are different, so
it is important to carefully consider weight loss goals, health status, and lifestyle.
After consulting a specialist, making a safe treatment plan
is the wisest approach.
