Jamsil Mole Removal CO2 Laser
How to Prevent Hyperpigmentation After Mole Removal

“I left the mole near my mouth alone because they say moles there bring good fortune,
but people kept saying it looked like I had something stuck by the side of my mouth,
so I’m thinking of removing it...”
In the past, many people were reluctant to remove moles from their face, especially those located at certain points often called “lucky moles.”
These days, however, if a mole is in an unattractive location, many people choose to remove it no matter how lucky it may be.
During consultations, we look at the face and, if we judge that the mole is a “charm mole” that can clearly enhance one’s appearance, we usually advise against removal first. Still, if the patient strongly wants it removed, I think removal is the right choice.
It is true that one should live daily life with the mole, and one’s own satisfaction should come first.
So today, let’s take a detailed look at mole removal using CO2 laser, including how the laser works on the skin and practical care methods to minimize hyperpigmentation and scarring.

Principle of CO2 Laser Action
Even if you know that moles can be removed with a laser, you may still be curious about the exact principle behind it.

For mole removal, a “CO2 laser” device is usually used.
The area where the mole sits is ultimately part of the skin tissue, and it contains plenty of water.
When the laser beam hits the mole, that moisture is instantly heated, and the mole tissue is vaporized and removed.
Simply put, it is similar to how water boils and turns into steam—the mole tissue essentially “evaporates.”
Of course, because this process happens in an instant, the surrounding normal skin is barely damaged.

One advantage of the CO2 laser is that it has little reflection or scattering.
In other words, while other lasers may spread out or bounce around when they hit the skin, the CO2 laser concentrates its energy at the target point.
It may be easier to understand if you think of it like a laser pointer being more precise than a flashlight.

In addition, the CO2 laser produces two effects at the same time during treatment: vaporization and coagulation.
It removes the mole tissue by vaporizing it while also coagulating the surrounding blood vessels to prevent bleeding.
That said, the treatment cannot simply be done with very strong energy. If it cuts too deeply at once, there is a risk of scarring, so it is actually safer to proceed in several stages.

Post-Procedure Care
Once the mole removal procedure is finished, aftercare begins.
It usually takes about 7 to 10 days for the skin to recover on its own until the scab falls off, and there are a few things you should follow during this period.

- Use a regenerative dressing
After mole removal, a regenerative dressing (commonly called DuoDERM) is applied.
It is not just for covering the treatment area.
It is used to absorb the fluid discharged from the mole removal site and to protect the treated area.
Light cleansing is possible starting the next day.
Wash while keeping the regenerative dressing on, and if a lot of water seems to have gotten under the dressing, replace it with a new one.
However, do not rub the treated area hard, and do not use products that may irritate the skin, such as exfoliants or scrubs.

- Avoid activities that make you sweat
Please stop going to saunas, jjimjilbangs, or doing strenuous exercise during the recovery period.
If sweat comes into contact with the treated area, there is a risk of secondary infection, and heat can worsen inflammation.
Yoga or a light walk is fine, but it is better to avoid activities that make your face flush or cause you to sweat.

- Do not pick off the scab forcefully
The scab that forms over the treated area must be allowed to fall off naturally.
If you scratch it because it itches or pick it off with your hands because you do not like how it looks, there is a high chance of scarring.
Under the scab, new skin is actively growing, and forcibly removing it is essentially the same as tearing that new skin away.

How to Prevent Hyperpigmentation
After about a week, once the scab falls off naturally, many people think the aftercare is finished.
But this is actually where the real key to preventing hyperpigmentation begins.

Pinkish new skin appears at the spot where the scab fell off. This new skin is usually much weaker and more sensitive than normal skin.
It is especially vulnerable to ultraviolet rays, so if it is exposed to UV without protection during this period, melanin may be produced excessively again and hyperpigmentation can occur.
That is why, even after the scab falls off, you should apply sunscreen carefully and keep UV protection thorough for at least 2 to 3 months.
No, actually you should use it for life, but you need to be especially strict during this period.
UV rays coming through windows are also significant, so it is better to use sunscreen indoors as well, and when going outside, wearing a hat or using a parasol is even better.

Today, we took a detailed look at the principles of Jamsil mole removal using a CO2 laser, post-treatment care, and the key points for preventing hyperpigmentation.
One thing I would like to say is that although mole removal has become very common, the essential fact remains that it is still a procedure performed on the skin.
So if you are considering treatment, I hope you choose a place that provides customized procedures based on your skin condition and the shape of the mole, and I will wrap up here.
