When a small bump appears on the face, it’s common to assume it’s acne and try pressing on it or squeezing it by hand.

But sometimes, trying to squeeze it only causes the skin to become red and swollen, while the problem remains unresolved.

There are several kinds of skin conditions that can appear on the face. It could be milia, or it could be a completely different type, such as syringoma or flat warts.

So today, let’s look at milia, along with syringoma and flat warts, which are easy to confuse with it, and also summarize how removal treatment is performed.

Jamsil What is milia?

Milia is a skin condition in the form of a small sac about 1 to 2 mm in size, located close to the surface of the skin.

It is white or yellow in color and may look like tiny grains at first glance, so some people call it “grain acne,” but it is not acne.

Acne is largely caused by overactivity of the sebaceous glands, but milia forms when keratin becomes trapped inside the skin.

So unlike acne, it does not become red and swollen or release pus, and even if you press it by hand, it is not easily squeezed out. It feels like a hard grain and is typically painless.

Milia usually appears around the eyes and on the cheeks. In particular, it often appears in clusters under the eyelids.

Syringoma often appears in locations similar to milia, but if you look closely, the appearance is somewhat different.

It is slightly larger than milia at 2 to 3 mm, and the color is skin-colored or a slightly reddish brown.

If milia is a white, round, grain-like bump, syringoma looks bumpy and slightly flattened, like a scattering of small sesame seeds.

Syringoma can be considered a benign tumor originating from sweat glands. It is also called “water warts,” but in fact it has nothing to do with warts.

It is more common in women after puberty, and the likelihood of occurrence is somewhat higher if there is a family history.

Compared with milia, milia tends to sit in a shallow area close to the skin surface, while syringoma is often located in a deeper layer of the skin.

So when you touch it, it feels firmer than milia.

Flat warts are different in nature from milia and syringoma.

First of all, the biggest feature is that they are caused by a viral infection, so they are contagious.

When human papillomavirus (HPV) invades the skin, the epidermal cells proliferate excessively, and flat warts form.

They are about 2 to 5 mm in size, so they are either a little larger than or similar in size to milia and syringoma, but they are skin-colored or light brown and have a flat surface.

If you scratch or touch a flat wart lesion, the virus can spread and the lesions may extend to the surrounding area.

It is also quite common for flat warts to line up in a straight line along scratch marks, or for people to realize only after infecting someone else through skin contact that it was a wart.

Jamsil milia How is removal treatment performed?

The first thing that must be done before milia removal treatment is an accurate diagnosis.

As mentioned earlier, there are similar-looking skin conditions that can be confused with it, so before removal treatment, correctly identifying the condition through diagnosis comes first.

Milia removal is mainly performed using laser treatment.

Since it is located shallowly, close to the skin surface, you can think of it as making a small hole with a laser and removing the keratin mass inside.

Because the procedure targets only the exact problem area, there is little concern about damaging the surrounding skin.

After the procedure, you can care for it by applying a regeneration tape for about a week.

Be careful not to let water touch it, and as the wound heals, it goes through the process of forming a scab and then naturally falling off.

Small bumps that appear on the face can be of various types, such as milia in Jamsil, syringoma, and flat warts.

Even if they look similar, their causes and characteristics are different, so an accurate diagnosis before treatment is very important.
