Jamsil PicoSure, if you’re worried about
skin pigmentation issues like melasma and dark spots?

'I wasn’t really the type to have many blemishes on my face,
but at some point, I started noticing a lot of them.
They seem to be getting darker too,
and I want to find a way to deal with them...'
When people say this, it is usually because they got through their 20s without much trouble, then were surprised to see blemishes gradually appearing at some point after their 30s.
In fact, skin pigmentation issues like melasma and dark spots can have many causes, and they are more like something that has been progressing over a long period of time before finally becoming visible.
In particular, melasma often has deep roots, so it is not something that can easily improve just by applying whitening cream and using masks diligently.
So today, let’s look at why skin pigmentation issues happen in the first place, and then put together the principles and effects of the PicoSure laser, as well as post-procedure care, all in one place.

Why do melasma and dark spots appear?
First, many people use the word 'blemishes' to refer broadly to any dark marks that appear on the face, so let’s break them down a bit more.
The reason we need to distinguish them is that the depth in the skin where the pigment settles and the cause of its formation differ from case to case.

First, melasma is a pigmentation issue that appears symmetrically on both cheeks, the forehead, or around the eyes, and has a brown to gray-brown color.
It is characterized by blurred, spread-out borders rather than clear ones.
It is divided into epidermal type, which exists only in the epidermis, dermal type, which settles deep in the dermis, and mixed type, which combines the two. In East Asians, the mixed type, where the depth of pigmentation is varied, is relatively common.

Next, freckles are usually located in the shallow epidermal layer and tend to become darker when exposed to sunlight for long periods.
Unlike melasma, they usually have relatively clear borders and can also be caused by genetic factors.

To summarize, blemishes or freckles on the epidermis can be compared to dust stuck on a window: if you clean them properly with the right method, they can be removed relatively easily.
On the other hand, melasma can be compared to color that has soaked into the glass itself; if you approach it lightly in the same way you would wipe away dust, you may only cause damage or even stimulate the deeper pigment layers and make it darker.
So the starting point for everything is to accurately diagnose exactly what kind of pigmentation is present in your skin.

The principles and effects of PicoSure
Now, let’s take a look at PicoSure, which is used for skin pigmentation issues.

The key feature of PicoSure is that it delivers laser energy to the skin for only an extremely short amount of time.
This very short time is one trillionth of a second. It’s truly a split second, right? The irradiation time is about 1,000 times shorter than the nanosecond (one billionth of a second) lasers that have been widely used before.
Why does this matter? Because by concentrating high energy over an extremely short period of time, it can break down melanin particles that cause pigmentation problems into very fine pieces.

Just as a large rock is hard to move as is but becomes easy to sweep away when broken into small pieces, pigment becomes easier to remove when it is fragmented into tiny pieces.
These tiny pigment fragments are then naturally eliminated from the body through the lymphatic system.

It is also worth paying attention to the 755nm Alexandrite wavelength used by PicoSure.
This wavelength has a high absorption rate for melanin while having low reactivity with blood vessels.
Put simply, it responds especially well to pigment without affecting other skin tissues. That is why it has the advantage of causing less unnecessary irritation.

Post-procedure care
In the process of pigment treatment, aftercare is also very important. The key points are sun protection and moisturizing. Let’s summarize those as well.

After the laser breaks down melanin, if the skin is exposed to ultraviolet rays while it is recovering, melanocytes can be stimulated again and the pigment can become active again.
So use a sunscreen with at least SPF 30, and reapply every 2 to 3 hours when being outdoors for extended periods.
In particular, the amount of sunscreen you use is important: to expect the labeled level of protection, you should spread about two finger-lengths’ worth evenly over the entire face.
Even on cloudy days or indoors, UV rays can pass through glass windows, so please make sure to use sunscreen as well.

After the laser procedure, the skin barrier may temporarily weaken, causing moisture to evaporate quickly and the skin to become dry.
So it is best to apply a gentle, low-irritation moisturizer sufficiently and frequently.
Moisturizing is helpful not only after the procedure but also in everyday life if you keep up with it consistently, so please keep this in mind.
Normal daily activities, light cleansing, and makeup are all fine.
However, alcohol, saunas or jjimjilbangs, hot baths, strenuous exercise, and the use of scrubs or peeling products can add extra irritation to the skin, so it is best to avoid them for about one week.
Today, we looked at why skin pigmentation issues like melasma and dark spots occur, as well as the principles and effects of pigment treatment through Jamsil PicoSure.
For pigment treatment to be meaningful, all three factors need to come together: 'accurate diagnosis → laser application suited to the skin condition → thorough aftercare.'
So before treatment, it would be good to get a consultation, check whether the clinic accurately diagnoses what kind of pigmentation issue you have, and see whether it suggests a treatment method that takes your skin condition into account.
