Or should I get an injection?”
This is a question we are often asked by people who visit us because of acne.
Some acne spots are difficult to resist touching, while others become worse the more they are disturbed.
Today, we will explain how to tell the difference between acne that can be extracted and acne that should not be squeezed, as well as how to treat acne that should not be squeezed.

What Is Acne Extraction?
Before deciding whether acne can be squeezed, it is important to first understand what extraction involves.
Extraction is a procedure that empties out the contents blocking a pore, such as sebum or pus.

The sebum inside the pore needs to be removed
Acne with contents that can be felt inside often settles quickly once it is emptied in this way.
However, extraction is suitable for acne that has something to be emptied, so not every type of acne can be resolved by squeezing it.
That is why, before squeezing, you should first check whether your acne is currently in a condition where extraction is appropriate.

Which Acne Can Be Squeezed,
and Which Acne Should Not Be Squeezed?
Even acne that looks similar may differ: some can be squeezed, while disturbing others can actually make them worse.
Comedones such as whiteheads, which are blocked and appear white near the surface, or blackheads, which appear dark, contain material close to the surface and are in a condition that is suitable for emptying through extraction.

Whether extraction is possible depends on the type of acne
In contrast, red, firm, swollen nodules or deep pustular acne that has become infected and settled deep beneath the skin should not be squeezed carelessly.
Forcing these types of acne can cause the inflammation to spread further into the skin, potentially leaving indented scars or pigmentation marks.
In particular, you should be careful with self-extraction using your hands or tools, as it can easily worsen inflammation and leave scars.
So, how should deep inflammatory acne that should not be squeezed be treated?
In such cases, rather than emptying it by squeezing, an approach that calms the inflammation itself is needed.
One representative option is an inflammatory acne injection, in which a small amount is injected directly into a significantly swollen area of inflammation.

This can help reduce swelling and inflammation within a few days, helping to reduce the risk of leaving a scar by squeezing too forcefully.
However, whether extraction or an injection is appropriate depends on the condition of the acne, so the first step is to assess what condition your acne is currently in.

What About Care After Extraction and Marks That Remain?
After calming acne with extraction or an injection, it is a good idea to take care of soothing, moisturizing, and sun protection together.
In particular, when sunlight reaches an area where inflammation has subsided, brown pigmentation can form easily, so consistently using sun protection can be helpful.
Also, once an indentation has formed, it cannot be filled by extraction or an injection and requires a separate approach.
This was covered in detail in a separate post, so if you are concerned about indented marks, you may also find it helpful to read the article below.

Today, we reviewed how to distinguish between acne that can and cannot be extracted in Jamsil.
In summary, shallow comedones that are blocked near the surface are suitable for emptying through extraction, while deep, pus-filled inflammatory acne is more safely approached with a method such as an injection to calm the inflammation rather than by squeezing it.
Above all, the first step is to check what condition your acne is currently in.
Before your hands reach for it, we recommend first checking whether it is acne that can be squeezed.
