Let’s take a proper look at how this affects dental health!
As the weather gets hotter, we tend to reach for refreshing iced Americano, carbonated drinks, ice cream, and more.
But did you know that frequently drinking cold food and beverages can have a negative effect on dental health?
Today, I’ll explain how cold drinks that we consume without much thought affect our teeth, and how to manage them.

The effects of cold drinks on teeth!
- Can trigger tooth sensitivity (dentin hypersensitivity)
The most common symptom is this sensitivity. When drinking cold beverages, the nerves inside the tooth react sensitively, causing a feeling of pain or sensitivity.
This is especially likely in the following cases:
-
When the gums have receded (cervical abrasion)
-
When there are tiny cracks in the tooth
-
When a cavity is in progress
-
When the tooth is worn down or an abraded area is exposed
If sensitivity continues, you should definitely get a dental examination.

- Can cause microscopic cracks on the tooth surface
Teeth may look hard, but they are sensitive to sudden temperature changes. Repeatedly consuming hot and cold drinks can cause micro cracks on the tooth surface.
These cracks can lead to
✔️ Food staining
✔️ Bacterial penetration
✔️ Increased risk of tooth fracture
so you need to be careful.

- Acidic drinks + low temperature = risk of tooth erosion
Cola, sparkling water, iced tea, fruit juice, and similar drinks are mostly acidic beverages. On top of that, drinking them frequently while they are cold can weaken the enamel layer and cause tooth erosion.
In particular, when the temperature inside the mouth drops
→ the bacteria-inhibiting function of saliva decreases, and
→ a vicious cycle of reduced tooth protection occurs.

These habits put stress on your teeth.
❌ Biting ice
❌ Alternating between cold drinks and hot food
❌ Drinking iced beverages before or after brushing your teeth
❌ Drinking a cold beverage right after waking up on an empty stomach
These habits directly stress the teeth and gums.
In particular, people who enjoy iced Americano often should be careful!

People like this should be especially careful when drinking cold beverages.
✔️ People whose teeth are usually sensitive
✔️ People with cervical abrasion (wear on the root side of the tooth)
✔️ People undergoing orthodontic treatment, or those with prosthetics such as resin or crowns
✔️ People with a history of gum disease
✔️ People who grind their teeth or clench their jaw
These people may react more sensitively to cold drinks, so be sure to make a habit of brushing or rinsing immediately after consuming them.
