However, if crowded teeth make brushing difficult and create a structure where tartar or plaque easily accumulates, the risk of cavities and periodontal disease increases, so orthodontic treatment for functional purposes may be necessary.

Also, if the teeth are twisted, the efficiency of chewing food decreases, and uneven force is applied to the temporomandibular joint, which can, over time, lead to problems such as temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ), headaches, and facial asymmetry.

In children, early diagnosis is very important. During growth, because the jawbone is still developing, it is possible to secure space or prevent malocclusion with relatively simple appliances, and the prognosis is much better than undergoing complex orthodontic treatment as an adult,

with advantages in both cost and treatment duration. Whether early treatment is necessary can be confirmed through a simple panoramic X-ray or lateral cephalometric X-ray, and it is important not to miss the timing through regular oral checkups.

In adults, because jaw growth has already ended, orthodontic treatment may require tooth extraction or surgery. In particular, when there is severe lack of space, removing some teeth is often necessary in order to align the teeth in place and achieve overall balance. However, with recent advances in various technologies such as non-extraction orthodontics, self-ligating brackets, and clear aligners (Invisalign), more customized treatment has become possible.
