When you look in the mirror in the morning and brush your teeth, you may notice bleeding. Many people brush it off as nothing serious, but in fact, it may be an important sign of gum disease rather than a simple, temporary bleed.
In particular, if your gums swell frequently and pus comes out when pressed, or if it is accompanied by unpleasant bad breath, you should suspect progressive periodontal disease rather than simple inflammation. These symptoms usually appear in the early stages of gingivitis or periodontitis, and if left untreated, they can lead to tooth loss.
Cavities, which we commonly know about, are a disease that damages the tooth itself. Periodontal disease, on the other hand, is a condition in which the gums and alveolar bone (jawbone) that support the teeth collapse. In other words, it is a frightening disease that shakes teeth from the root. In the early stages, there is
almost no pain, so it is hard to notice, but at some point the gums begin to swell and bleed, and discomfort starts when chewing food.
If there is pus, the gum disease may already be advanced.
A condition with pus means that bacteria have already deeply infiltrated the periodontal pocket, and recovery is difficult with scaling alone. Inside the gums, tartar formed from calcified plaque is firmly attached to the surface of the tooth root, and bacteria continue to multiply on that surface, causing inflammation. As a result, gum tissue is gradually destroyed, and the immune response becomes excessive due to toxins produced by the bacteria, worsening the inflammation and leading to pus.
In addition, bad breath becomes more severe, the gums may become sore or painful, and in severe cases the gums recede, exposing the tooth roots. This is not only cosmetically undesirable, but it also causes sensitivity and tooth mobility, and can even progress to a point where it becomes difficult to keep the teeth.
Do not ignore the warning signs sent by your gums.
When these symptoms appear, you should visit the dentist immediately for an accurate diagnosis. Beyond simple tartar removal, you may need root planing or curettage, which carefully treats the root surface and the inside of the gums where the inflammation has spread. In some cases, periodontal surgery may also be performed alongside this, where the gums are incised, inflamed tissue is removed, and the alveolar bone is regenerated.
Especially when pus is present, it means bacteria are actively multiplying, so the source of the bacteria must be thoroughly removed along with taking antibiotics for the inflammation to subside and the gum tissue to begin healing.
If treatment is delayed, the jawbone supporting the teeth may gradually deteriorate, making it impossible to support the teeth, and in many cases the natural tooth must eventually be extracted.
The best treatment for gum disease is prevention.
Prevention is the best treatment. Good brushing habits, regular scaling, and proper flossing are helpful, and a diet that supports gum health is also important. However, if you are currently experiencing frequent bleeding and repeated gum swelling, do not delay any longer and get an accurate diagnosis through periodontal specialty care.
Just because there is no pain does not mean everything is fine. Periodontal disease is a frightening condition that quietly, but steadily, threatens your teeth. The disappearance of visible symptoms does not mean it has been cured, and consistent care is absolutely necessary even after treatment.
