Hello, we are S Leader Dental Hospital, Achasan Station Dental Clinic, celebrating our 22nd anniversary this year.

“Doctor, it didn’t used to be like this, but the space between my front teeth seems to be getting darker and more empty.”
“Whenever I take photos, that area stands out even more.”
“When I floss, there’s some bleeding too... Could it be gum disease?”
A black triangle (the triangular space that appears on the gum side between teeth) is a concern for more people than you might think. In particular, those who have had orthodontic treatment, people with sensitive gums, or those who often get food stuck between their front teeth may notice it more easily.
But there is one important point here.
Even if it feels like it is “getting bigger,” that does not necessarily mean gum disease is progressing.
On the other hand, there are also cases where changes in gum condition really do cause the black triangle to become larger.
So today, at Achasan Station Dental Clinic, S Leader Dental Hospital, we will carefully organize the criteria so patients can judge for themselves.
-
What a black triangle is
-
Why it can feel like it is getting bigger (including visual illusion)
-
Reasons it can actually get larger (and its relationship to gum disease)
-
Accompanying signs to check at home
-
Warning signs that need prompt evaluation

What the dental clinic checks
-
How it is managed/treated depending on the cause
Let’s go through each of these step by step.

First, a quick summary: a black triangle “getting bigger” is different from teeth becoming spaced apart.
A black triangle is simply the space that appears on the gum side between two teeth. It is a little different from a “gap” caused by the teeth themselves moving apart.
Tooth gap (spacing): the space between teeth often appears to open from the top.
Black triangle: the teeth may still seem to be touching, but only the lower gum side looks triangular and empty, so it appears dark.
Why does this difference matter?
Because if the problem is a tooth gap, the tooth spacing needs to be adjusted, while if it is a black triangle, the key point is how much the gums fill that space. In other words, even if it looks like the same “empty space,” the cause may be different.

4 common reasons the space between teeth can feel like it is “getting bigger”
When a black triangle feels like it is getting larger, sometimes it really has enlarged, but other times it has simply become “more visible.”
Here are the four most common reasons.
- As gum swelling goes down, the line becomes clearer and it can look “bigger”
When the gums are swollen or inflamed, they may look like they cover more of the space between the teeth. But after scaling or good care reduces the swelling, the gum line becomes more defined and the lower area can stand out more.
This may not mean the gums suddenly became worse; rather, the swelling went down and the original contour became visible.
- It can look worse in photos because of lighting or angle
Black triangles are especially noticeable in photos. Under flash, bright lighting, or an angle where the mouth is opened wide, the shadow on the gum side becomes darker and the “black triangle” can look larger.
That is why many people say, “It looks fine in the mirror, but in photos it seems bad.”
- After orthodontic treatment, alignment can make the space more visible
Before orthodontic treatment, overlapping or rotated teeth may have hidden the space well, but after the teeth are straightened, the lower space can become more noticeable. In reality, it may not be newly created; rather, the space that had been hidden becomes visible as the teeth are aligned.
- It can actually get larger when the gums recede or do not fill the space well
This is the part we really need to check. If the gums become weaker or inflammation repeats, the gum tissue between the teeth may lose its ability to fill the empty space, and the black triangle can become larger.

6 causes that can truly make it larger (key causes)
This is the important part. These are the causes that should be considered when you feel that the black triangle is “getting bigger and bigger.”
We will explain these in more detail in the cause section below.
- Repeated gum inflammation can weaken the gum tissue between the teeth.
Gums often signal with “bleeding” or “swelling” before pain appears. If the gum tissue between the teeth swells and bleeds often, it becomes harder for that gum tissue to stay firm, and the empty space can become more noticeable.
- If the supporting bone around the gums decreases, the space may look larger.
Gums sit on top of bone. If the support under the gums (bone) becomes weaker, the gums may lose some of their ability to fill the space. This is difficult to judge by appearance alone, so if the signs keep repeating, it is best to have it checked at the dental clinic.
- Brushing too hard can make the gums sensitive.
When worried about black triangles, some people think they need to brush harder. But gums do not improve just because they are rubbed forcefully. In fact, the gums can become irritated and sensitive. It is especially important to avoid brushing the gumline of the front teeth too aggressively.
- Poor interdental care (lack of floss/interdental brush routine)
The area where there is a black triangle tends to trap food more easily, and if that food remains, inflammation can recur.
Many people say, “I brush carefully, but I don’t use floss much,” but if the black triangle feels like it is getting bigger, care between the teeth is very important.
- Teeth grinding/clenching, or chewing mostly on one side
Teeth and gums are sensitive to force. If you have a habit of clenching your teeth tightly or chewing mostly on one side, the gums in certain areas can become more sensitive. If the black triangle becomes especially severe in just one or two teeth, it is a good idea to check for the influence of these forces as well.
- If the tooth shape is closer to triangular (a type that stands out more from the start)
Some people have teeth that are wider at the top and narrower at the bottom, so the contact point between teeth tends to form higher up. In such cases, the triangular empty space on the gum side can be more visible. In other words, even without a gum problem, it can stand out more structurally.

Could it be a sign of gum disease? 8 accompanying signs to check at home
If a black triangle feels like it is getting bigger, and the following signs are present too, it may be more reasonable to suspect a change in gum condition.
If 2 or 3 or more apply, we recommend getting it checked.
- Your gums bleed when you brush.
- You bleed when flossing, or there is a smell from the floss.
- Your gums often swell or feel itchy.
- Bad breath has become more noticeable than before.
- Food gets stuck between your teeth more often.
- Your teeth feel longer. (It feels like the gums have receded.)
- One specific area feels especially sensitive or uncomfortable.
- You feel a dull discomfort when chewing.
In particular, the combination of “bleeding + odor + swelling” should not be ignored.
“When to get it checked right away” warning signs that call for a prompt visit
Even if it feels like the black triangle is getting bigger, many people put off visiting as long as daily life is not very uncomfortable.
However, if any of the following apply, it is better to be checked early rather than just watch it:
- You feel that it is clearly getting bigger over the course of a few weeks (the change is rapid)
- Bleeding and swelling are present
- There are signs of inflammation such as a pus-like feeling or heat
- It becomes especially severe in only one or two teeth
- Sensitivity suddenly becomes much worse
- Chewing feels uncomfortable, or the teeth feel loose
In these cases, it is much easier to first stabilize the gum condition.

What does Achasan Station Dental Clinic check? (Diagnosis flow)
If you visit because the black triangle feels like it is getting bigger, the dental clinic usually checks the following:
- Where the gum bleeding/swelling/tartar is located
- How sensitive the gum tissue between the teeth is
- Imaging if needed to check the condition of the jawbone supporting the gums
- Whether the “space” is due to tooth spacing or due to the gums not filling it
- Whether chewing force is concentrated on one side (bite/clenching habits)
In other words, rather than asking, “Should we fill it with resin?”, the priority is to find out why it is getting larger.

How is it treated/managed? (Approach by cause)
The treatment method changes depending on why the black triangle is getting larger. Here is a practical summary of the most common approach.
When gum inflammation is the cause
In this case, stabilizing the gums comes first.
Scaling, gum treatment below the gumline if needed, and establishing an interdental care routine are the key points. As inflammation decreases, the space may appear less noticeable, and at the very least it helps prevent it from getting larger.
When gum recession is also involved
It is important to reduce habits such as brushing too hard and to change to a method that keeps the gums clean without irritating them. If there is sensitivity, sensitivity care can also be done together.
When tooth shape/contact point issues (including after orthodontic treatment) are significant
In this case, after stabilizing the gums, aesthetics and function are considered separately.
The approach may differ depending on whether the concern is only appearance or whether food continues to get stuck.
Depending on the case, resin correction or other methods may be discussed, but the results are generally better if the gums are addressed first.

A black triangle that feels like it is getting bigger: check the cause first
A feeling that the black triangle is gradually getting bigger may simply be a visual illusion, or it may be a sign of a change in gum condition. It can stand out more because of photo angles or changes in swelling, but if bleeding, swelling, and odor recur together, or if one specific area seems to enlarge quickly, the fastest way is to have the gums checked once. Gum problems are easier to treat the earlier they are found, and above all, it is much easier to prevent them from getting worse.
At Achasan Station Dental Clinic, S Leader Dental Hospital, for patients who visit because the black triangle feels like it is getting bigger, we do not look only at aesthetics. We first check gum bleeding, tartar location, and gum condition to distinguish whether the cause is gum inflammation or a structural issue, and then provide a management plan.
Because black triangles have many possible causes, it is difficult to judge them alone, and incorrect care (such as brushing too hard) can actually make the gums more sensitive. Before your worries grow, we recommend checking your current condition accurately and starting with a care routine that fits your situation.
