Hello, we are Merry Plastic Surgery Clinic, glad to meet you.
To quickly understand what patients want, it is very important to stay on top of trends.
So, we often check what people are searching for on major portal sites and YouTube.
Today, I was curious about what people think of when they hear “side profile,” and what they want to know about it,
so I searched for “side profile.”
When I searched “side profile” in the Naver search bar, “ugliness” came up first.

This time, I searched for “side profile” on YouTube.

Similar to Naver, searches like “flat side profile” and “how to have a handsome side profile” rank near the top.
Seeing that people search for how to have a handsome side profile rather than a pretty side profile,
you can tell that men are more interested in side profiles and nose lines.
For reference,
we also made a video on a similar topic on our hospital’s YouTube channel.
We prepared it to be as fun and informative as possible, so please click and take a look.
What kind of nose looks pretty from the side??

The side effects of rhinoplasty
Haven’t you ever imagined what someone looks like without a mask when they are wearing one,
or looked at someone’s side profile and then quietly moved to the front to check what they look like head-on?

Today, I’d like to talk about the “side-profile effect” of rhinoplasty—how the nose can look beautiful from the side.
After rhinoplasty, of course, it should look beautiful from the front and from the side.
That way, the surgery feels worthwhile, right?
So then, what kind of nose looks beautiful from the side?
You often hear things like, “I raised the bridge by 3 mm” or “I raised it by 5 mm.”
You may also hear things like, “This time I went with a straight-but-slightly-curved line” or “a semi-curved line.”
Of course, height and line are both important!
But if you really want the side profile to look beautiful, you need to consider several factors together.
What side profile lines are popular?
Although it is not a formal medical term, the side profiles that are mentioned most often are three types: “semi-curved,” “straight-semi-curved,” and “straight nose.”
After consulting with many patients, there are differences in personal preference,
but most women tend to prefer a straight-semi-curved nose, while most men prefer a straight nose.

Looking more closely at the straight-semi-curved nose:

The line from the bridge to the tip continues in a straight line,
while the area where the tip transitions into the columella is shaped with a curve, which makes the tip appear more emphasized.
In contrast, the straight-semi-curved line can be divided in various ways depending on the height,
such as a glamorous line where both the bridge and tip are high,
or a natural line where the bridge and tip are more naturally shaped.
Recently, the expression “natural yet glamorous” has become especially popular.
It means naturally glamorous, and it came into use because many people prefer a naturally high line.
When patients come in for a rhinoplasty consultation, they also bring photos of celebrities they want to resemble.
Here too, you can clearly see a change in trends.
In the past, semi-curved noses with a more emphasized tip, like Han Ga-in and Min Hyo-rin, were very popular,

These days, straight-feeling straight-semi-curved noses like those of Shin Se-kyung, Winter, and Go Youn-jung are often preferred.

In particular, among the women who have consultations, it seems that more than 60% mention Shin Se-kyung as the nose shape they want.
Among men, many bring photos of Ji Chang-wook or Park Bo-gum, and these men have noses that are straight and clearly extended.

The nose line and facial proportions
When considering the line of the nose, you should always take facial proportions into account.
In particular, you need to carefully consider the ratio with the length of the midface.

When a person’s face is divided into upper, middle, and lower sections, the nose is the most essential part of the midface.
In addition to the nose, features such as the cheekbones and philtrum also play a very important role in the balance of the midface.

A face with a wide midface and a short vertical length often tends to have a smaller nose.
For these individuals, choosing a straight type that lengthens the nose, such as a straight-semi-curved or semi-curved type,
can improve the horizontal-to-vertical ratio and create a more balanced, stable-looking face.
Conversely,
a face with a good midface width and a long vertical length often tends to have a longer nose.

For these individuals, lowering the starting point of the bridge a little and changing the nasal tip to a slightly semi-curved or straight-semi-curved type
can also help create better facial balance.
Today, we looked at popular side profiles and the relationship between facial and nasal proportions.
I have a lot more to say about side profiles, so I’ll continue in Part 2.
Next time, let’s look at how to enhance the face’s S-line.
