Hello, this is Merry Plastic Surgery Clinic, a place that’s always a pleasure to visit.
These days, while looking into what kind of noses people are curious about, I ended up writing about the side line of the face.
As the discussion grew longer, it became a two-part series.
Today, I’d like to talk about the S-line of the face.
If it’s hard to follow in text, we’ve made YouTube content with fun photos and videos,
so please take a look~
If you subscribe and turn on notifications, we’ll share information that helps you stay one day younger and a little more beautiful.
What kind of nose looks pretty from the side?
Finding the face’s S-line

Shall we look at the side line of the face in a little more detail?
First, let’s look at the forehead-to-nose line.
Did you know that an S-line also exists in the nose?
It’s not only the body line that has an S-line; the forehead-nose line also has one.
For women, the line connecting the forehead and the starting point of the nose, forming an S-shape, tends to look more attractive,
while for men, a more straight Z-line is considered much more attractive.
On the other hand, if the bridge of the nose is made too high, it can look too strong, like a lion’s nose or a robot nose, so this should definitely be avoided.
The relationship between the columella, nostrils, and alar base
I think I’ve explained the bridge and tip line of the nose enough from the front, so now let’s move a little lower and look at the relationship between the columella and the nostrils.
The side line may look pretty, but sometimes the columella protrudes and makes the nose look long,
or the nostrils project forward and make it look blunt.
The relationship between the columella and the nostrils is also very important.
In general, a nose that looks attractive has a line where the columella protrudes slightly and the alar base falls off more narrowly.

If the columella protrudes too far forward, the nose looks longer and the inside of the nostrils becomes more visible.
Conversely,
if the columella is too recessed and the nostrils project outward, the nostrils can look larger.
There is also a way to solve these problems.
If the columella droops, it can be corrected by reducing the columella,
and if the alar base is wide, it can be addressed through alar reduction.
I’ll explain this in more detail again later in a video and in writing.
Nasolabial angle
The 기준 for a glamorous nose and a natural nose
These days, among people interested in nose surgery, there don’t seem to be many who are unfamiliar with the term nasolabial angle.
The nasolabial angle refers to the angle between the nose and the upper lip.
This angle holds the secret to making the line of your nose stand out more.

More precisely, the nasolabial angle refers to the angle at the philtrum where the upper lip and the nose meet.
To be even more exact, it may help to think of it as the angle formed by the columella and the philtrum.
This angle can serve as a 기준 for distinguishing a glamorous nose from a natural nose.
If it becomes too wide, the nose may look upturned; if it becomes too narrow, it may look hooked.
That’s why finding the optimal angle is the most important thing.
When Han Ga-in’s nose was especially popular, there seemed to be a lot of discussion about what the ideal angle was.
This is actually a very difficult question to answer,
but generally, an ideal angle is considered to be around 90 to 100 degrees for women and 80 to 90 degrees for men.
However, the angle can vary depending on personal preference and facial proportions.
Even during surgery, everyone has different facial shapes, skin characteristics, skin thickness, and available materials,
so you must receive a consultation and examination from a specialist.
At that time, you should explain in detail the look you want and what you dislike,
so that after surgery you can be satisfied with the line and angle of the image you wanted.
Ricketts line
Connecting the nose to the chin
The next important part is the Ricketts line.
This may sound a little unfamiliar, but it refers to the line connecting the tip of the nose and the tip of the chin.
If you place your fingers on the tip of the nose and the tip of the chin in a shooting pose,
you’ll be able to confirm that the upper and lower lips touch.

What does the ideal Ricketts line look like?

Medically, it is considered ideal for the upper lip to be about 4 mm and the lower lip about 2 mm behind the line, as shown in the illustration.
But
in Korea, people tend to prefer a face with a slightly smaller lower jaw,
so the preferred look is for the upper lip to be about 1 mm back, and the lower lip to protrude very slightly, about 0 to 1 mm.
The Ricketts line is not absolute, but it is a proportion that makes the face look attractive,
and you can see that the ratio changes depending on the angle of the nose tip, the degree of lip protrusion, and the degree of chin protrusion.
Therefore,
while raising the nose tip is important, if you also decide on issues like a recessed chin or protruding mouth in line with that,
you can create a more ideal line.

What needs to be in harmony?
So far, we’ve talked about various aspects of the side line of the nose,
forehead-nose linebridgetip~nostrils/columella
nasolabial angle
Ricketts line, too!!
The key point today is that only by considering not just the lines directly related to the nose, but also various factors that seem unrelated to nose surgery,
can you achieve a satisfying side profile line.
On the other hand, what happens if you ignore these proportions and angles and have surgery based on what you want or what others recommend?
Only the nose at the center of the face will stand out,
or even if it doesn’t, it will likely feel somehow unnatural and very artificial.
Rather than saying that things like how high to make the bridge or what material to use for surgery are unimportant,
what matters most is how naturally and beautifully the nose surgery can be done,
and that requires considering various lines together under multiple conditions.
