Why do fires increase especially in spring?
Let’s briefly go over it first.
Dry weather makes even a small spark spread easily into a large fire
Increased outdoor activities raise the risk of forest fires and grass fires
Spring cleaning and moving season increase electricity usage
Careless use of fire sources (cigarette butts, camping flames, etc.)
According to the Seoul Fire and Disaster Headquarters, about 30% of all fires occur in spring.
Let’s quickly look at the five fire prevention rules recommended by the Seoul Metropolitan Government.
- Smoke only in designated areas!
After smoking, make sure to fully extinguish cigarette butts before throwing them away.
- Manage sparks carefully during camping and outdoor activities
Cook only in permitted areas, and make sure to completely put out any fire.
- Check electrical and gas systems at home
Old wiring and using overloaded power strips are a no-go!
When leaving home, be sure to turn off the gas valve.
- Check fire extinguishers and know where they are
Keep fire extinguishers in your home, car, and campsite, and learn how to use them.
- If you discover a forest fire, report it to 119 or the Korea Forest Service (1688-3119)
Making a quick report is more important than trying to extinguish it at the initial stage.
Please keep this in mind! Major spring fire incidents
Forest fires becoming large-scale due to cigarette butts carelessly thrown away, which are currently a problem and have always been a problem
Electrical fires caused by failing to properly store winter heating appliances such as electric mats and heaters
Tent fires and casualties caused by leaving sparks unattended at campsites
It’s also good to know how to report to 119.

Fire prevention is the best approach.
Fires can happen anytime, anywhere. Especially in dry weather like spring, even one small act of carelessness can lead to a major disaster. To protect your family, neighbors, and yourself, please be sure to remember the Seoul fire prevention guidelines introduced today.
