More Tooth Reduction or No Reduction Is Not Always Better

“How much will my teeth need to be filed down?” This is the question I receive most often. You should not fall into the black-and-white thinking that no-prep veneers are always good and tooth reduction is always bad. The essential point is achieving the goal of aesthetic improvement.

For people whose teeth are well aligned and positioned but are slightly small, no-prep veneers may be appropriate. However, if the teeth are large and crooked and treatment must proceed without orthodontics, some reduction is unavoidable. My standard approach is minimally invasive: I first simulate the final shape with a diagnostic wax-up, then work backward from that reference to reduce only what is absolutely necessary. This is the same principle I followed while placing 5,000 veneers in Apgujeong.

Let me show you one case I treated personally during my time in Apgujeong. The top photo shows the teeth before treatment, the second shows them after minimal reduction, and the last shows them after the veneers were placed.

Sensitivity: When the reduction is limited to the enamel, there is theoretically little to no sensitivity. Even when the reduction reaches the dentin, most patients adapt within one to two weeks in my experience.

Fracture and debonding: I explain the expected survival rates based on statistical figures of 95% at 10 years and 85% at 20 years. Avoid eating soy sauce marinated crab carelessly or opening bottle caps with your front teeth.

Maintenance: Veneers are not a treatment that ends when they are bonded in place. Regular checkups, scaling, and gum care determine how long they last.

In fact, this last point is one reason why having treatment in Changwon can be more convenient.
