Changwon Gapped Teeth: A No-Prep BioClear Resin Veneer Case

Today, I’d like to introduce BioClear, a Changwon resin veneer treatment that can improve gaps between the teeth—also known as diastema—without removing any tooth structure.

I’ll also show you photos from an actual case I treated myself.

Changwon Resin Veneers: What Causes Gaps Between the Teeth?

Gaps between teeth are medically referred to as interdental spacing, or diastema when the gap is between the central teeth. There are various causes.

① The jawbone is naturally wider than the size of the teeth

② The labial frenum connecting the upper lip and gums is thick

③ Gum disease causes the supporting bone to recede, creating spaces between the teeth

④ A habit of pushing the front teeth with the tongue, among other causes

In particular, gaps between the front teeth can make people self-conscious when smiling, and food can become trapped frequently, making oral hygiene more difficult.

Changwon Resin Veneers: What Are BioClear No-Prep Resin Veneers?

BioClear is a resin veneer technique in which a special transparent film-like mold, or matrix, is closely fitted to the teeth, and resin—a composite material—is injected into it to create the desired tooth shape.

This is what it looks like.

A major advantage is that it can be performed as a completely no-prep procedure, without grinding down the outer surface of the teeth as is done with conventional laminates or crowns.

In addition to closing gaps between teeth, it can also be used to reduce black triangles between the teeth or refine teeth that are slightly chipped or worn.

However, compared with ceramic laminates, the surface gloss and stain resistance may be somewhat lower, so regular checkups and maintenance are needed after treatment.

Also, because of the properties of resin as a material, please keep in mind that its expected lifespan may be somewhat shorter than that of ceramic laminates.

Nevertheless, for those who are hesitant about laminates because of the fear of tooth reduction, it can be a good alternative when the case is suitable. Let’s take a look at some actual cases.

“I’m concerned about the space between my lower teeth!”

The photo below shows a before-and-after comparison of a patient who was treated with BioClear no-prep resin veneers for gaps between the teeth.

Although these were lower teeth, the spaces were visible when speaking or smiling, which reportedly made the patient self-conscious whenever they looked in the mirror and caused them to cover their mouth when smiling.

As a cosmetic dentist, it hurts me whenever I hear that patients cannot smile confidently. On the other hand, I feel happiest and most rewarded when they say, “Thanks to you, I can smile brightly again.”

The patient found the cost of laminates burdensome and asked about an easier way to improve the appearance at a lower cost. Instead of no-prep laminates, I recommended no-prep resin veneers.

As you can see, the spaces between the front teeth were naturally filled without trimming any teeth, and the overall harmony of the dentition improved considerably. The treatment took about one hour in a single day. We also made an effort to minimize the black triangles between the teeth.

I hope the patient can now smile brightly! Haha.

The case below involved a foreign patient whom I treated in Apgujeong. Even when a space has developed at the center of the upper teeth, it can be restored quite naturally with no-prep resin veneer restorations if the patient does not want to make a major change to the tooth color. Simply closing the space resulted in a much more attractive smile. Haha.

In the case above, the lateral incisors were treated with laminates, while the central incisors were restored with resin. Depending on the case, these methods can also be used together.

Are there any other alternatives?

Yes, of course. One representative option is orthodontic treatment, which moves the teeth to close the space. Minimally invasive laminates, and in some cases no-prep laminates, are also possible.

It would be best to determine the most accurate diagnosis and treatment plan after a thorough consultation.
