Underarm body odor refers to a condition in which an abnormal smell is produced due to a problem with the sweat glands in the armpit area.

The main cause of this condition is sweat glands called apocrine glands. These glands are abundant in the armpits and secrete fatty acids and organic substances. The secreted substances are broken down by bacteria, producing an unpleasant odor.

It is known that about 10% of Koreans have body odor, and because it is a strongly familial genetic condition, if one parent has body odor, the children are also more likely to develop it.

More than half of patients with body odor also have hyperhidrosis, so in addition to the symptoms mentioned above, many experience inconvenience in daily life due to excessive sweating.

SIT surgery is performed through a small incision of about 3 mm along the armpit crease. It proceeds by removing the apocrine sweat glands using a suction device, and it has the following features.

1. Small incision: Scarring is minimal, and the recovery period is short.

2. Low recurrence rate: Because the sweat glands are removed fundamentally, the recurrence rate is low, at less than 1%.

3. Quick recovery: Daily life is possible within about 2 to 3 days after surgery.

4. Safety: There is almost no bleeding or side effects, and the procedure is highly safe.

SIT surgery is performed under local anesthesia, and the operation takes about one hour.

First, a 3 mm incision is made along the armpit crease, and the apocrine sweat glands are removed using an ultrasonic liposuction device. After that, any remaining sweat glands are removed with a special cannula, and the incision is closed.

After surgery, a compression bandage is applied, and you should avoid moving your arms for about a week. Sutures are removed by yourself after 3 days, and you can shower from that point. Full recovery takes about 4 to 6 weeks.

Although the recurrence rate is low, ongoing care is still necessary after surgery. It is good to wash the armpits frequently, wear well-ventilated clothing, and using deodorants or perfumes that help reduce odor can also be helpful.

For prevention, improving lifestyle habits is important. It is good to bathe often to maintain cleanliness, change underwear frequently, and removing underarm hair can also help prevent body odor.

It is also good to reduce the intake of high-fat, high-calorie foods such as meat, eggs, and milk, and to eat yellow and green vegetables and fruits often.
