First, hyperhidrosis is a phenomenon in which excessive sweating occurs due to an overreaction of neurotransmission. Depending on the cause and the amount of sweat produced, it is classified into localized or generalized hyperhidrosis, and when there is a lot of sweating in the underarms, it is classified as localized hyperhidrosis.
This can cause clothes to become wet or stained, and may interfere with social life and interpersonal relationships.

Bromhidrosis is a condition in which secretions from the apocrine glands among the sweat glands in the underarms are broken down by bacteria. It usually appears after puberty and is known to be influenced by genetic factors with a strong family history.
The main symptoms are a persistent unpleasant and strong odor, yellow staining when wearing white clothes, and often damp earwax.

These conditions, hyperhidrosis and bromhidrosis, not only cause inconvenience in daily life but can also lead to psychological problems such as social withdrawal and depression, so active underarm sweat odor treatment is necessary.
One common cause of both conditions is the sweat glands concentrated in the underarms. There are two types of sweat glands, called eccrine glands and apocrine glands, and hyperhidrosis and bromhidrosis occur due to abnormalities in these glands.

Eccrine glands are colorless and odorless, and are made up of 99% water, playing a role in body temperature regulation and waste elimination.
In contrast, apocrine glands secrete a milky, highly viscous sweat. It does not smell at the time of secretion, but as it is broken down by bacteria, it turns into fatty acids and ammonia, causing bromhidrosis.
The causes vary. In the case of hyperhidrosis, it often occurs when the sympathetic nervous system becomes overactive due to stress or emotional stimulation, and bromhidrosis is mostly related to genetic factors. It can also occur due to conditions such as obesity or diabetes, or as a side effect of medication.

The SIT surgery for underarm sweat odor treatment is a surgical method that removes the apocrine glands using a thin 2–3 mm specialized cannula in the underarms. Unlike conventional surgical methods, it is performed through a small incision of about 3 mm, so there is almost no scarring, and it is characterized by a low recurrence rate.
It can improve both bromhidrosis and hyperhidrosis at the same time, which leads to high patient satisfaction. The procedure takes about an hour, is relatively short, and same-day discharge is possible, allowing a quick return to daily life.

- On the day of surgery
As the anesthesia wears off, pain may be felt, so it is recommended to take pain medication. A compression band should be worn over the surgical area, and care should be taken to keep it dry.
- 1–2 days after surgery
Pain may continue, and the surgical area may swell. At this time, cold compresses are recommended. Care should be taken not to move the arms excessively.

- 3–7 days after surgery
The stitches at the surgical site are removed. After that, showering is allowed, and the band does not need to be worn. However, alcohol and smoking should be avoided because they interfere with recovery.
- One month after surgery
The surgical site will have fully recovered. However, ongoing care is needed to prevent recurrence.

There are various methods for treating underarm sweat odor, but among them, the SIT procedure for underarm sweat odor has the advantages of a low recurrence rate and long-lasting results.
Because the procedure time and recovery period are short, busy office workers and students can also undergo it without much burden, so if you are worried about it, I hope you will make a careful decision this time.
