Understanding the Causes and Symptoms of Axillary Bromhidrosis and the Fundamental SIT Surgical Treatment
Kim Heon-gon Plastic Surgery Bromhidrosis Clinic
Hello, everyone^^
This is Kim Heon-gon Plastic Surgery Bromhidrosis Clinic, where a board-certified plastic surgeon with 20 years of experience treating bromhidrosis and hyperhidrosis is on staff.
Axillary bromhidrosis refers to a condition in which sweat is excessively secreted from the sweat glands in the armpit area, causing a distinctive odor. It is related to the sweat glands called apocrine glands.

These sweat glands secrete fatty acids and organic substances together, and when they combine with bacteria on the skin surface and break down, they can cause an unpleasant odor. For this reason, many people struggle with concern and stress.
It is known that about 10% of Koreans experience axillary bromhidrosis, and genetic factors play the biggest role.

Common symptoms of bromhidrosis include heavy sweating and odor in the armpit area, a moist texture of earwax, family history, and discoloration in the armpit area when wearing white clothing.
Axillary bromhidrosis can cause psychological stress that interferes with social life, and because it may also be associated with emotional withdrawal and lowered self-esteem, it is best to seek active treatment if you are concerned about it.

More than half of patients with axillary bromhidrosis also have hyperhidrosis, so the two symptoms may appear together. This can increase discomfort in daily life, and the stress of potentially causing unpleasant feelings in others can lead to difficulties in interpersonal relationships or complaints of depression.
Traditional treatment methods for axillary bromhidrosis included incisional surgery and laser procedures. However, these treatments had low satisfaction among patients because they carried a high recurrence rate and could cause side effects such as scarring and pain.

In the case of incisional surgery, the sweat glands are removed by making an incision in the skin. However, it had drawbacks such as a long recovery period and possible scarring. Laser procedures also had limitations, including a high recurrence rate and the need for repeated treatments.
The treatment that overcomes the limitations of these existing methods is the 'SIT surgery.' It is a local anesthesia procedure that directly removes the apocrine sweat glands that cause bromhidrosis, performed through a small incision of about 3 mm, and same-day discharge is possible.

SIT surgery involves making a small incision along the armpit crease and removing the sweat glands using an endoscope and specially designed instruments. Because the removed sweat glands do not regenerate, it enables a fundamental treatment of bromhidrosis, and the recurrence rate is significantly low at less than 1.7%.

-
Short surgery time: The procedure takes about 20 minutes per armpit.
-
Low recurrence rate: As mentioned earlier, it has a low recurrence rate of 1.7%. This is a meaningful difference compared with other procedures and surgeries.
-
No need to wear a compression bandage: You do not need to wear a compression bandage during recovery, allowing for a quicker return to daily life.

There are a few preparation steps and precautions before full-scale SIT surgery, so if you are considering treatment, it may be a good idea to review them once before making your decision^^
- Fasting: On the morning of surgery, you should not eat breakfast or even drink water. This is to prevent vomiting caused by the anesthetic.

-
Comfortable clothing: Because movement may be somewhat uncomfortable after surgery, it is best to come wearing comfortable clothes. Also, do not bring accessories or valuables.
-
Accompanied by a guardian: Since using public transportation may be difficult, we recommend coming with a guardian if possible.

Even after SIT surgery, in order not to worry about axillary bromhidrosis, lifestyle improvements are needed, along with limiting high-calorie foods, getting enough sleep, and managing stress. If symptoms appear again, please visit the clinic immediately for a consultation.
If axillary bromhidrosis is causing difficulties in your social life or interpersonal relationships, consider treatment for bromhidrosis so you can enjoy a more confident daily life.
