There are two types of sweat glands that cause bromhidrosis: eccrine glands and apocrine glands. Sweat secreted by eccrine glands is colorless and odorless, but when it is released onto the skin surface, it is broken down by bacteria into fatty acids and ammonia, producing an unpleasant smell.
