Bromhidrosis refers to a condition in which an abnormal odor is caused by the sweat glands in the underarm area. It is known that about 10% of Koreans experience this condition, and the unpleasant odor occurs because substances secreted by the apocrine glands are broken down by bacteria, producing fatty acids and ammonia.

The main symptoms of bromhidrosis include a foul smell when you place tissue under both armpits and sniff it after 5 minutes, yellowing under the armpits by evening when wearing white clothes, or damp earwax.

More than half of patients with bromhidrosis also have hyperhidrosis, so many people experience inconvenience in daily life because of this.

The causes of bromhidrosis vary. Genetic factors are the biggest cause, and after puberty the symptoms worsen as hormonal influences make the sweat glands more active.

In addition, conditions such as obesity or diabetes, as well as stress or tension, can also act as factors that worsen bromhidrosis.

The causes of underarm odor vary. The representative causes are as follows.

1. Bromhidrosis

This is a condition in which sweat secreted from the apocrine glands, the sweat glands in the armpits, is broken down by bacteria, producing fatty acids and ammonia that cause a bad odor. Bromhidrosis has a strong genetic component, and symptoms worsen after puberty.

2. Hyperhidrosis

This is a condition in which excessive sweating occurs in the armpits, and it often appears together with bromhidrosis. Hyperhidrosis is a phenomenon in which excessive sweating occurs due to an overreaction in nerve transmission. Symptoms may worsen due to mental stress or emotional stimulation.

3. Bacterial infection

If bacteria infect the armpit and cause inflammation, an odor can occur. The main causative bacteria are usually Staphylococcus aureus or E. coli.

To achieve satisfactory results from SIT surgery for removing underarm odor, postoperative care and the recovery process are also important. In general, you should rest for about 2 to 3 days after surgery, after which light daily activities are possible.
