Recently, more people have been combining corner eye surgery, which can create a change in appearance by increasing both the horizontal and vertical length of the eyes. There has been a growing preference for eyes that appear longer from side to side. This kind of expansion in the horizontal and vertical dimensions of the eyes is possible through eyelid corner surgery.
Eyelid corner surgery is broadly divided into front corner surgery (upper corner surgery), outer corner surgery, and lower corner surgery, and the surgical methods include incision and non-incision techniques.
Recently, some people have preferred the non-incision method because the surgery time and recovery period are short, and there are no sutures, which reduces concern about scarring. The incision corner surgery method can leave a small scar of about 5 mm to 6 mm, but since the location and shape of the scar are not easily visible from the outside, it has the advantage of being less likely to loosen and of producing results compared with the non-incision method.
Front corner surgery is possible for eyes with a narrow horizontal width, eyes that appear to slant upward, eyes that seem far apart, or in cases with a pronounced epicanthal fold.
The surgical method involves making incisions at the inner corner of the eye and below the eye to remove the epicanthal fold while opening up the front of the eye. Front corner surgery has the advantage of changing the eye shape by adjusting the slope at the inner corner of the eye, and the scar is almost invisible.
Outer corner surgery is a procedure that opens up the outer corner of the eye to improve the size and shape of the eyes.
Lower corner surgery is a procedure that lowers the outer corner of the eye further through the conjunctiva. Stitch removal is not necessary, and because the surgery is performed through the conjunctiva, the scar is not visible on the outside.
For all surgeries, various factors such as the structure of the eyes, the degree of eyeball protrusion, and harmony with the double eyelid line must be thoroughly analyzed through preoperative consultation. The idea that a non-incision corner surgery method is always better is a misconception, and it is important to plan the surgery so that the appropriate type of corner surgery and surgical method are chosen for each person, allowing for a naturally balanced eye shape.
