Hello, this is Woori Plastic Surgery.
During consultations, many patients ask about the difference between breast reduction and breast lift. Today, let’s take a look at the differences between the two.
Difference Between Breast Reduction and Breast Lift

At first glance, breast reduction and breast lift may seem like completely different procedures, but in reality, the surgical methods have more in common than you might think. Both procedures use similar incision designs such as peri-areolar incisions, vertical incisions, and anchor incisions, and they share the common goal of removing sagging skin that is visible from the outside. The biggest difference between a lift and a reduction is how much internal tissue is removed. If the surgery only tightens the outer skin and moves the internal tissue upward, it is a breast lift. If a significant amount of tissue must be removed because both sagging and size are concerns, that is breast reduction.
In other words, if size is a concern, reduction is needed; if only sagging needs to be corrected, the focus is on lifting. In practice, however, most cases involve both sagging and size concerns, so breast reduction often naturally includes a lifting process.
Will Areola Reduction Cost Extra?

Some people wonder whether the areola also needs to be reduced and whether that would involve an additional cost. In most cases, the areola naturally becomes smaller or remains unchanged during breast lift or breast reduction, so it is rarely done as an additional procedure. Because the areola position is adjusted together with the tissue lift, a naturally balanced shape is created. In some cases, making it an appropriate size can actually look more natural in terms of overall proportions.
Differences by Incision Method

As you move from peri-areolar incision to vertical incision and then to anchor incision, the amount of tissue that can be removed increases, and the range of breast reduction and lift surgery becomes broader. In particular, when the breasts are significantly sagging and large, the anchor incision is often more advantageous.
✔️ Peri-areolar incision: suitable for a very mild lift
✔️ Vertical incision: allows moderate lifting and reduction
✔️ Anchor incision: allows the greatest amount of lifting and reduction
Is It Possible with Only a Peri-Areolar Incision?

A lift that can be done with only a peri-areolar incision is limited to very mild sagging. If one tries to lift too much beyond the plan or insists on using only a peri-areolar incision, the areola may stretch over time, which is why this method is not used as much these days.
Although breast reduction and breast lift have different names, the actual design and process are quite similar. The difference is simply how much to reduce and how much to lift, depending on the size of the breasts, the degree of sagging, and skin elasticity. Since both procedures can provide significant functional and aesthetic improvement, if you are considering them, it is best to get a consultation at a clinic that can create an accurate surgical design.
