Hello, this is Woori Plastic Surgery.
Many people come in for consultations saying that their jawline looks broad because of a double chin, or that their face looks heavy downward. Especially when considering double chin muscle binding, people often ask questions like, “Is it safe?”, “Will the nerves be okay?”, and “Will the fat come back?” Today, I’ll organize the key points that are often explained in the clinic, so you can know what to keep in mind before surgery.
Isn’t it dangerous?

The most common concern during consultations is nerve damage. The double chin area requires a wide dissection range, so there is some possibility of bleeding. However, if the procedure is planned and performed with 충분한 consideration of the anatomical structure, the chance of motor nerve damage is not high.
After surgery, you may temporarily feel numbness, but in most cases it gradually recovers over time. Since there are individual differences, it is necessary to receive a thorough explanation of the extent and method before surgery.
Does bio-bond form?

What is commonly called “bio-bond” is often not an official medical term, but rather a way of describing a condition in which fluid collects in the space where fat was removed and hardens, making the area feel firm. Double chin liposuction is also a removal procedure, so this can happen.
To reduce this, wearing a compression band after surgery is important. By reducing the empty space through compression, it can help ease fluid buildup.
Where does the scar appear?

The incision is designed to be placed inside the natural crease line that appears when you tilt your chin down. Even if the surgical plan sets it at about 2 cm, it can open during the procedure and end up around 2.5 cm in final length. Over time, it tends to fade gradually.
Bruising is often not severe, and because of its location it is easy to hide, so the burden on daily life is relatively small. However, if double chin muscle binding is performed together, you may feel tightness when swallowing or moving your neck, so recovery guidance is given a little more conservatively.
Double chin muscle binding performed together

Double chin muscle binding is sometimes considered together as a method to help make the line under the neck look more refined, not simply to reduce fat. This is because there are cases where fat removal alone does not make the contour as defined as desired.
However, double chin muscle binding is not necessary for everyone. The plan changes depending on conditions such as neck thickness, skin elasticity, the location of the fat (superficial/deep layer), and chin length and structure. So during consultation, we explain whether fat removal alone is sufficient or whether including double chin muscle binding would be more advantageous.
Double chin liposuction is not about removing as much as possible, but about balancing and refining the jawline and neck line. Depending on the need, a plan may also be made to consider double chin muscle binding together in order to create a more defined contour.
In the end, the key is to first accurately determine whether your double chin is mainly fat, or whether muscle/skin elasticity factors are also involved. In consultation, it is safest to decide this calmly by looking at the facial structure and the distribution of the fat layer.
